Safety Tip of the Week is on “Preventing Falls in the Home.”
Falls in the home are often due to hazards that are easy to overlook but easy to fix.
Hopefully this checklist will help you find and fix hazards in your home.
Check your floors to make sure they are clear of lamp cords, extension cords, telephone cords, throw rugs that do not have a non-slip backing, loose or torn carpet, and any other objects that could cause a person to slip or fall.
Check your stairs to make sure you have sturdy handrails on both sides of the stairs and they are as long as the stairs.
You should always make sure your stairs are well lighted with a light switch at the top and bottom of the stairs.
It is safer not to use a step stool when trying to reach things on high shelves. However, if you must use a step stool make sure it is a steady step stool with a bar to hold on to.
When trying to get up out of a chair or bed it is better to do so slowly to prevent a fall.
Consult your Medical Doctor on any medication that you are taking because some medicines can make you sleepy or dizzy.
It is always a good idea to have a telephone in the house that can be reached from the floor in case you fall and cannot reach a telephone.
Keep emergency numbers in large print near each telephone or programmed in the telephone for a quick dial or reference.
