The other day, I overheard a conversation (and I use that term very loosely) — and this is a brief excerpt from it:

“And so anywho, like, I was like, you know, soooo mad that I could, like, hardly —you know what I mean? — even, like, speak.”

The rest of the conversation was like a game of ping pong — with “like”, “so” and “anywho” getting paddled back and forth until my brain was about to explode — You know what I mean?

It made me realize just how many little phrases are so overused these days. The kind of phrases that make you want to say, ever-so-politely, “Excuse me but would you please SHUT UP!”

You probably have your own infamous phrases you have grown tired of hearing … and perhaps they line up with some of mine:

• A newscaster informing us that a house was “completely destroyed” by a fire or tornado.

Now, long ago, one of my journalism professors noted that something cannot be “completely destroyed.” It’s redundant. Why? Because “destroyed” means “to put out of existence” — so just saying that the house was destroyed suffices.

• Why do people end sentences with “so”? As in, “I didn’t like the looks of it, so.”

Hey, — SO — are you done with the sentence or not?

• “I love this so much.”

The above is an exaggeration said about anything and everything that a person sort of takes a liking to.

• I’m so over it …

• At the end of the day.”

At the end of the day I sincerely hope you are still not talking…

• “I know, right?”

• “It is what it is.”

What is?

• “I heard that.”

I heard you are irritating.

• “I’ll tell you one thing!”

Please don’t.

• “It’s neither here nor there.”

Well, it has to be somewhere.

• “Amazing.”

Everything — I mean EVERYTHING — is amazing to some people.

• “To be honest”, “To tell you the truth”, and “I misspoke” …

Are all often said by liars.

Oh, and how about these beauts that you hear all the time from sports announcers:

• “They’re playing with a lot of swagger tonight.”

• “He needs to step up to the plate.”

• “He’s going to play on Sundays.”

And of course, the always-popular “trickeration”, “elite talent”, and “Physicality.”

Oh, and one more … my my all-time favorite overused sports term:

“SEC speed.”

Glade group on a mission to have road designated as Scenic Parkway

Special to The Vista

A group of Fairfield Glade residents is preparing a request to designate State Route 101 (Peavine Road) as a Scenic Parkway under the Tennessee Scenic Parkway program. The request, and a supporting petition, will be submitted this spring to the Commissioner of the Tennessee Department of Transportation.

“We are excited to launch this effort,” said Cathy Tipton, leader of the Friends of Peavine, a group of citizens organized to obtain the parkway title. “Peavine Road being designated as a Parkway will be a huge plus for Cumberland County.”

According to Tipton, a Parkway designation under the Tennessee Scenic Parkway program promotes several important goals, among them protecting and preserving Tennessee’s scenic and natural qualities, and furnishing motorists a safe and relaxing route to experience the beauty of Tennessee.

A Parkway designation for Peavine Rd. would protect Tennessee’s scenic and natural qualities, not to mention place reasonable limits on outdoor advertising.

The designation also places reasonable limits on outdoor advertising.

The request consists of a letter asking for the designation, along with a map and photos of the route, as well as a description of how Peavine Road would contribute to the overall Tennessee Parkway system.

“The request must include strong community support for the designation, and to do that we need help. This is where the County and local residents, particularly in Fairfield Glade, come in,” says Tipton.

Interested residents and visitors alike can sign a petition prepared by the Friends of Peavine to show support for this designation. Watch for the Friends of Peavine volunteers at the Village Green Mall common area in Fairfield Glade to sign the petition in the coming weeks.

Interested citizens may also sign the petition (on page 2A) and mail it in.

“We hope everyone in the Glade and surrounding communities will support this initiative by signing their name to the petition,” says Tipton.

Experience has shown that residents of Cumberland County place a high value on its scenic beauty. They can show their support of this project as a way to protect that beauty and preserve it for future generations.

Interested individuals can volunteer to help or just learn more about this effort by visiting the Friends of Peavine website at www.friendsofpeavine.org. Questions can also be directed to Cathy Tipton at friendsofpeavine@gmail.com.

Chris Celik President-elect of the Rotary Club of Fairfield Glade completed the three day Rotary Multi-District training session in Nashville, TN.

Mid-South P.E.T.S. or Presidents-Elect Training Seminar is a multi-state training session of the six Rotary Districts in Alabama, Kentucky and Tennessee. Rotary club leaders generally represent key community leaders throughout the world.

Consisting of well known exceptional speakers, informative Roundtables and Discussion Groups, detailed district training sessions, fellowship and networking, the basic purpose of P.E.T.S. is to have the best prepared, most enthusiastic club presidents in the Rotary world. Annually, nearly 400 Presidents-elect return home from Mid-South P.E.T.S. prepared to carry out their Rotary duties when they take office in July.

Rotary is a volunteer organization of 1.2 million business and professional leaders united worldwide to provide humanitarian service and help build goodwill and peace. Over 34,000 Rotary clubs in more than 200 countries and geographical areas conduct projects to address today’s challenges — including illiteracy, disease, hunger, poverty, child abuse, lack of clean water, and environmental concerns — while encouraging high ethical standards in all vocations.

CELIK

As the world’s largest private provider of international scholarships, The Rotary Foundation of Rotary International helps more than 1,000 students annually to study abroad and serve as cultural ambassadors. Rotary also partners with seven prestigious Universities around the world, providing opportunities to earn a master’s degree in peace and conflict resolution.

PolioPlus is Rotary’s flagship program. In 1985 when the Polio eradication program began, there were over 1,000 new polio cases reported per day. By the time polio is eradicated, Rotary club members will have contributed over $1 Billion and countless volunteer hours to immunize more than two billion children in 122 countries.

Rotary is a spearheading partner in the Global Polio Eradication Initiative, along with the World Health Organization, UNICEF, and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

This initiative has reduced the polio epidemic to just three endemic countries.

Last year the total number of polio cases reported was only 223. As of March 21st this year, only 11 cases have been reported.

The Rotary Club of Fairfield Glade was chartered in 1983 and meets at Noon on Tuesdays at Legends at Druid Hills Country Club.

The first May meeting was reserved by the Fairfield Glade Lions Club to honor this year’s “Students of the Month” and their families.

Nine of the 10 students were able to attend. Dakota Tillman from The Phoenix School was unable to attend because of prior commitments. Dakota was selected and honored for the month of April.

There was a full house of Lion members and guests in attendance. Retiring Director of Schools, Aarona Van Winkle was the guest speaker.

She presented an inspiring video of a motivational speaker for the benefit of all to hear. She also took part in presenting engraved plaques to all the “Students of the Month” for a lasting memory of the month they were selected.

Also in attendance were families of the students and their High School Counselors. In addition, the new Director of Schools, Donald Andrews, was on hand to compliment the Lions for the “Student of the Month” Program and congratulate the students for their selection.

Each student was introduced with his or her family members and photos were taken to remember the occasion.

“Student of the Month” Lion Chairman Bob Cover, added his pride in being a part of this program and wished the students great success in their futures.

Each student has the opportunity to apply for a part of the $6,000 Special Lion Scholarship Program.

A committee of Lion members and the school counselors review the applications and select the winners. Winners are announced at their graduation ceremony.

The Lions “Student of the Month” Program has been an on going event for many years in the Cumberland Co. School System.

It started with only Cumberland County High School with 10 students. It changed to include Stone Memorial High School when they opened with five students from each school.

It now includes The Phoenix School with two students and four from CCHS and SMHS.

Lion Program Chairman, Bob Cover, commented, “ I wish we could include more students in the selection but we have limits.

“There are many outstanding young people in our school system that requires recognition. We wish them much success in their desired fields and futures.”

For The Vista

The Fairfield Glade Fire Department received a call of a structure fire early Sunday morning May 5, 2013, from 911 Dispatch.

The fire was called in by a member of Fairfield Glade Fire Department, who saw a large orange glow coming from a wooded area down the hill from his location.

When the first Engines and fire personal arrived they had to stretch some 1,200 ft of supply line to reach the front of the structure. The two story structure had the right side of the roof burned off, and the roof had collapsed along with the floor onto the lower level.

I believe that the fire had been burning for some time and had a very big head start on us. This fire had plenty of time to spread, and it spread quickly.

Some 32 Fairfield Glade Firefighters along with apparatus worked well into the night and the early morning hours to extinguish what was left of the new unoccupied structure which was being built and nearing complication. All available personal and equipment responded quickly to the scene

The fire is under investigation conducted by the Cumberland Counties Sheriff’s department fire investigator to determine the cause of the fire, if possible.

Growing geese population may be cause for concern in Glade

By KEITH WALTHER

Publisher/Editor

As children, we all had fun playing the game, “Duck, Duck, Goose!”

But as adults we find the amount of geese here in Fairfield Glade may be making us duck and watch where we step — no fun at all.

In fact, along our many lakes, the plethora of these birds have become a fowl nuisance — and, more importantly, a potential health problem.

This topic was addressed at the latest Fairfield Glade Community Club Board Meeting and Board President Bob Stackhouse assured all that the Club is taking it head on.

Stackhouse announced that the United States Department of Agriculture will visit Fairfield Glade to address the geese population and its possible health hazards. The geese are taking over our beaches and have been a big problem on our golf courses.

The USDA will hold a town hall meeting today, May 7, from 3 to 5 P.M. to address the situation as to what can be done to alleviate this problem. Residents can take in the Power Point presentation and the question-and-answer session to follow.

In doing research about “Goose Grief”, it was quickly learned that the problem is not the presence of geese but the sheer number of geese. It takes persistence and a combination of tactics to keep geese from becoming pests.

Keep in mind that an adult Canadian Goose may eat as much as four pounds of grass and other forage daily. That leads to about two pounds of goose droppings daily!

One can immediately see that — with large populations — this could become a health hazard Depending on the area, their feces may be dispersed in ponds or lakes or it may end up on land. Unfortunately ideal goose habitat is often ideal human and pet habitat too. And that is the problem that is presenting itself here in the Glade.

The problem could wreak havoc on our golf course, lakes and beaches. But it also could be potentially harmful to our pets.

Dogs in general love goose feces. If cats happen to step in it, and then clean themselves, they could also become ill.

As with most fecal material, goose poop has Salmonella and E coli present. So, a small amount of these bacteria could be ingested. Luckily, most of them would get destroyed in your dog’s stomach and intestinal tract.

Perhaps of more concern is that Canada Geese may help to spread bacteria that have antimicrobial resistance. A study done by the CDC (Center for Disease Control) on a resident flock of Canada Geese in Georgia and North Carolina showed that antibiotic resistant E coli could be carried by the geese. There was great variation depending on the water areas the geese were inhabiting. Water sources located near intensive farming operations such as pig farms, tended to support geese with more antibiotic resistant bacteria. Migrating geese could spread those bacteria, though on a very small scale.

Looking at goose poop from geese living in a park, no antibiotic bacteria were isolated. So the habitat of the geese is a big factor – not the Canada Geese themselves.

Of more concern for our area is Giardia and Cryptosporidium in the ponds and lakes. These pathogens can cause diarrhea and intestinal problems. They are spread by many wild animals and birds – not just geese.

In other news from the Board Meeting:

• The possibility of closing the Fairfield Glade post office was discussed and Stackhouse said that negotiations continue, which so far has increased the annual subsidy from $31,000 up to $38,000, plus a reduction of the required business hours. The board of directors will make no decisions until negotiations are finalized and in writing.

• The Dorchester pool cabana and the St. George Pavilion are now under roof. The Druid HIlls pool cabana plans will be ready by June.

• Through March, there were 19 single family detached homes; there were no manufactured or mobile homes; 51 new homes under construction and 14 new home completions; 138 miscellaneous constructions were approved — according to Harry Price of the ACC Committee.

• Regina Welch reported that the Club’s cash on hand at the end of March was $4 million. The Amenity Reserve Fund grew $20,000 the first quarter and now totals $238,000.

• Public Works director Tim Martin mentioned that Eagle Lane and Fairway Drive will be paved soon by the County and that bids are going out on other roads that will be done this year by the Club.

• James Ivankovich of Food and Beverage, noted that March was a good month and the reduced operating hours in November thru March resulted in a savings of $45,000.

Some that were upset that the prizes awarded at the weekly Black Jack and Poker nights at Stonehenge Grille were discontinued. When questioned, the reason for this was that it had been discovered that the State of Tennessee considers prizes for playing cards to be gambling and thereby illegal.

Stackhouse explained that prizes can be awarded for games of skill like golf — scrambles and tournaments. However, prizes cannot be given for games that the State of Tennessee deems to be gambling, such as card games and bingo.

• Steve Kraft, Golf Director, reported that March was below budget by 2,420 rounds — the worst March in the last 13 years. But Kraft was fair to point out that there were only six days in March that had temperatures above normal.

• Appropriation Requests approved by the board: Dartmoor Lake spillway project for $196,000 which is below the $220,000 budget and $171,900 for budgeted Facilities Maintenance.

Construction of the new Wyndham Welcome Center is nearing completion.

According to a spokesperson for the company, bull dozing, hammering and the heavy construction should conclude May 27 or 28. Approximately 80 to 100 associates will move-in on the morning of May 30.

The new Welcome Center will essentially move from its current location across Mirror Lake to the Stonehenge Road entry. It will house resort check-in as well as sales professionals who market Wyndham vacation properties in Fairfield Glade.

Cost of the 14,523 square foot building was estimated at $3.5 million.

The building has been designed with a distinctive, graceful look that fits comfortably into the Fairfield Glade area. The building should enhance the sense of arrival to Fairfield Glade because visitors are greeted by a unique facility located in the center of the community.

This is also a place where residents and guests gather for events like the Mirror Lake Blast and Arts and Crafts Festivals.

Adding to the character is a proposed Hall of Fame containing artifacts and photos celebrating the historic past of Fairfield Glade. Residents will have the opportunity to contribute photos to “The Decade Wall” featuring photos or other artifact for display.

The single-story facility has several environmentally friendly components such as flooring made from recycled materials as well as energy conserving lighting. Operational efficiency and productivity for the Wyndham Welcome Center incorporate the latest technology and computer systems. Grand opening ceremonies are tentatively scheduled August 20 and 21.

Wyndham Vacation Ownership is a member of Wyndham Worldwide and traded on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE: WYN). Vacation Ownership is headquartered in Orlando, FL. and is supported more than 15,000 associates globally.

The Fairfield Glade Ladies Club invites you to attend their Fourth Annual Spring Marketplace Home and Garden Show.

Spring has spring and the Village Green Mall in Fairfield Glade will come alive with visions of spring and summer on Friday and Saturday, May 17-18. Inside and out, the mall will be bursting with vendors — such as the Glade’s own Landscape Solutions — turning it into a shopping paradise in which to purchase special items for your house or garden.

A huge variety of hanging baskets, planters, annuals, perennials and garden statuary, along with indoor-outdoor furniture, will be available for viewing and purchase from 9 A.M. until 3 P.M. both days.

Other vendors on site will provide ideas for that next remodel and offerexpert advice on trouble spots such as gutters, pest control, flooring selections and other home improvements.

For those without a green thumb, you might visit the venders selling a great variety of indoor floral arrangements, beaded jewelry, scarves, kitchen items by Pampered Chef, home cleaning supplies and home décor. New this year will be fabric, crafts and quilts as well as bath and body products and facial masques.

The weekend promises something for all. The Marketplace is being held in conjunction with the Fifth Annual Garden and Kitchen Tour, a one-day event on Saturday, May 18,beginning at 10 A.M.

Tickets for the tour are $12 prior to May 10 ($15 after that date) and may be purchased from either Collage or Brownstones located in the Village Green Mall. This is your opportunity to peek into some of the Glade’s beautiful homes and gardens.

Open to the public, time share visitors and Cumberland Plateau neighbors are especially invited. There are several places in Fairfield Glade to have lunch, shop and make a day of it.

Tickets will be on sale and this is where tour-goers will receive maps and directions to the gardens and kitchens they will see.

All net profits from these combined events are designated for the Fairfield Glade Ladies Club Scholarship Fund for Cumberland County students.

For more information, contact Marsha Mellert, Project Chair, at 496-4680.

For The Vista

D2 is honored to come back a second year for the House of Hope benefit. If you missed last year’s sold-out show at the Palace Theatre, here’s your chance to see outstanding entertainment for a great cause.

“The Many Colors of Country” concert will take place at the Historic Palace Theatre on Main Street in Crossville on Monday, May 13.

Doors will open at 6 P.M. and the show will start at 7 P.M. General admission tickets are $15 and can be purchased from the Threads of Hope Thrift store located at 230 Woodmere Mall on Main Street or reserved by debit or credit card call 931-707-2273.

Here’s the list of performers:

Dennis Donald, of DSquared Productions and Entertainment, an actor, singer, musician, recording artist and co-founder of D2; 14-year-old Cheyenne Graff whose natural ability to perform is amazing; Terry Henderson better known as the Voice; Ashley Krohn, a young and incredible singer/songwriter who has just recorded her first CD; Rusty McClanahan, solo singer from Swing Street Big Band and lover of country music; Jason Sanders, singer/songwriter/musician plays keyboard, fiddle, dobro, and harmonica; and Frank Saxton, musician/arranger/singer who will wow you with his Boots Randolf tribute; Regina Stephens; beloved home town gal, well known from Big South Opry; and Anthony Woolbright, a classic country singer whose popularity is soaring will all take the stage to help the House of Hope in its mission of giving hope to many children who have been forced to endure abuse largely due to their parents’ addiction.

House of Hope provides immediate need services and a temporary safe haven to any child that has fallen victim to any form of child abuse.

Since their inception in June of 2004 House of Hope has provided over 8,000 services for children in crisis.

The concert entitled “The Many Colors of Country” will focus on the many different types of country music. Classic country music, popularized in the Appalachian Mountains and the South, goes back as far as the 1920s.

The traditional mountain music sound of the Carter Family and Jimmie Rogers, who was known as the Father of Country Music is a far cry from what you hear on most of today’s country music stations. The legendary Elvis Presley made his debut as a country singer and his fame and fortune can be accredited to not only his great voice and stage presence, but to the sounds and popularity of country music.

There are a lot of different types, or genres, of country music. County pop is perhaps the most listened to today.

It is a blend of country and hip hop and is the sound of many modern artists such as Taylor Swift, Jessica Simpson, and Shania Twain.

Pop country artists are classified under this genre if their country songs cross over and make it onto the top 40 radio pop list. This genre first appeared in Nashville during the 1960s.

During the 1940s, Bluegrass made its way onto the music scene. It is a fusion of country music, jazz, ragtime, and traditional music. If you’ve seen the movie “O Brother Where Art Thou” then you’ve heard bluegrass. Dolly Parton is a popular, iconic figure that sings Bluegrass Country music.

Rockabilly, also known as hillbilly music, became popular in the 1950s.

Buddy Holly is another name that comes to mind when you think of rockabilly.

Other types of country music or sounds are: Nashville Sound, Cowboy (Gene Autry, Roy Rogers, Sons of the Pioneers) Bakersfield Sound, Western Swing (Bob Wills), Country Rock, Outlaw, Cajun, Texas/Red Dirt, and country rap.

On Friday, May 10 the Fairfield Glade Hiking Group will be going to the Big South Fork area to Pickett State Park.

The hike has a little of everything; unique land formation, cliffs, creeks, rhododendron, a waterfall, etc. Hikers should bring lunch to eat on the trail.

Difficulty: This hike is rated moderate. They will do a loop that is eight miles. There is some elevation gain. Good hiking boots are always recommended.

Hiking has risks and safety is a high priority on every outing. Hazards include uneven trails, drop-offs, slippery rocks, stream crossings, wildlife encounters, auto accidents, and more. The hiking group assumes no collective or individual liability for any mishaps.

Hiking is at your own risk. Participants in the hikes should be in good physical condition. Walking on paved and level surfaces does not compare with hiking on uneven trails with elevation gains and losses. Please assess your level of fitness to the difficulty of the hikes so that you can keep up with the group.

Hikers should wear good sturdy hiking boots, be prepared for changes in temperature and weather, carry a day pack with first aid gear, bring insect repellent, and take plenty of water to drink. Be aware of your personal health and know your abilities and limitations. Everybody is different. You are responsible for your own safety during the hike.

There is a sheet for this hike and the overnight on the bulletin board across from the Fairfield Glade Post Office for people to sign up for the hike. The group will depart from the parking lot closest to the 4-way stop sign in Fairfield Glade at the corner of Peavine and Stonehenge at 8 A.M. sharp.

Please be there between 7:30 and 7:45 A.M. to receive information and form carpools. If you ride with someone else to and from the hike the policy is to reimburse the driver for gas. The amount to reimburse the driver for this hike is $6 per person. Please have the correct amount.

Please call the leaders of the hike or Mary Kopmeier at 456-2597 or Anne Dodge at 410-924-7579 if you have any questions. Please check out our web site by going to Google and typing in FFG Hiking.

The extreme heat and drought of 2012 was hard on lawns and gardens. “Many gardeners are facing a blank slate of bare soil, masses of dead patches that were once lawn or a bit of grass interspersed in a sea of weeds,” says gardening expert Melinda Myers.

I recommend following these steps to improve lawns this season.

Start this spring to renovate or improve your weather-worn lawn. Remember that water is critical to get newly seeded and sodded lawns to survive. So be prepared to help nature along with the recovery effort.

Evaluate the damage. Then use the check list below to find the best course of action to aid the ailing lawn.

If the lawn is more than 60 percent weeds or bare soil, it’s probably time to start over. Use this opportunity to create a great foundation for growing a healthy lawn. Kill off the existing vegetation, add several inches of organic matter such as compost or peat moss and a low nitrogen slow release fertilizer into the top 6 to 8 inches of soil, and rake smooth.

Select more drought tolerant grasses like rhizomatous (turf-type) tall fescues, buffalo grass, and Habiturf® native lawn mix. Make sure the grass is suited to the climate and plant according to the label. Then sow the seeds, lightly rake and mulch or lay sod. Water often enough to keep the soil moist until the seeds sprout or the sod roots into the soil below. Then water thoroughly when the top few inches of soil are crumbly, but slightly moist to encourage deep roots.

Proper Lawn repair can rehabilitate a lawn and create the perfect lawn you always wanted.

Fertilize new, existing and stressed lawns with a low nitrogen slow release fertilizer like Milorganite. It won’t harm stressed lawns, young seedlings or newly laid sod. It will encourage slow steady growth. Southern lawns can be fertilized in April and again in early June. In the north fertilize around Memorial Day. And if 2013 turns into another hot dry summer, it won’t burn the lawn.

Mow high to encourage deeply rooted grass that is more drought tolerant and pest resistant. And mow often, removing only a third of the total height. Be sure to leave these short clippings on the lawn. They return moisture, nutrients, and organic matter to the soil.

Repair small dead and bare patches as needed. Use a lawn patch kit, grass seed and mulch. For small spots, loosen the soil surface, sprinkle grass seed and lightly rake. Or mix a handful of grass seed in a bucket of topsoil. Sprinkle the mix over the soil surface.

Do a bit more soil preparation when renovating larger dead areas in the lawn. Remove or kill any weeds that have filled in these areas. Till two inches of compost, peat moss or other organic matter into the top six inches of soil. Sow seed, rake and mulch or lay sod.

Overseed thin and sparse lawn. First, core aerate the lawn to improve soil conditions and increase seed-to-soil contact. Spread grass seed over the aerated lawn and water as needed. Or rent a slit seeder or hire a professional with this type of equipment. These machines slice through the soil and drop the grass seed in place, increasing the seed-to-soil contact which is needed for good germination.

Core aerate lawns that have more than one half an inch of thatch, those growing in compacted soils, or before overseeding. By removing plugs of soil you break through the thatch and create channels for water and fertilizer to reach the grass roots.

Spot treat weeds on lawns that need minimal repair. Wait at least until fall to treat new and overseeded lawns. Spot treating minimizes the use of chemicals and reduces the stress on already stressed lawns. As always read and follow label directions carefully.

Proper maintenance and a bit of cooperation from nature will help transform a lawn from an eyesore to an asset in the landscape.

Members of the Cumberland Medical Center Wellness Complexes at Crossville and Fairfield Glade will be offered a special price for personal training during May for members to learn the benefits of being coached by a professional certified trainer in their exercise routine.

Members will be able to purchase three 30-minute training sessions for $26. It amounts to one free session.

The offer is limited to one training package per person.

“This is a great way for someone professionally certified in exercise to help a member to get the best results from a workout,” said Wendy Reed, Fairfield Glade facility exercise manager and a registered nurse.

“It’s important for each member to learn their weaknesses and their strengths. Workouts should challenge both. The best results come when somebody else (the trainer) tells you what to do, and you just do it,” Reed said.

“It’s my experience that personal training, especially as we age, is an excellent way to maintain good health.

“I’ve seen many seniors, who exercise on a regular basis, bounce back from illness very quickly. It also makes a huge difference in attitude and mobility,” she said.

DSquared Productions (D2) second Voices of Vegas was another resounding success and they are now selling tickets for their May 6th production. Each show in this series is completely different! The music, performers, staging, dinner, etc. each cover a different time period.

For this show, you will hear the lovely Ashley Krohn giving tribute to Celine Dion among others; Terry Henderson (the Voice) will please you with anything he sings; the incomparable Terri Utsey will give tribute to Bette Midler and more; Cheyenne Graff may give tribute to Miranda Lambert, Shania Twain, LeAnn Rimes or other female country singers that have played Vegas. Dennis Donald may cover Bob Dylan, Bob Segar, Eagles, Elton John, Barry Manilow or any of the era’s male singers.

Once again Frank Saxton on the sax will be playing for your listening pleasure during dinner as well as Jason Sanders on the keyboard.

Dinner will be served family style. The menu for this dinner will consist of hearty meat loaf patties, fluffy baked potatoes (with butter, sour cream, bacon bits and green onions), sweet corn off the cob, jelled salad, rolls, Dixie’s surprise dessert and coffee, tea or lemonade.

Where can you get quality entertainment, lovely costuming and staging, great food, free coffee, tea, lemonade, and popcorn or fifty cent can drinks all for $25?

This has got to be the best entertainment deal in all of Eastern Tennessee and it’s right here in your backyard!

If you don’t believe it, you have a chance to find out for yourself. D2’s May 6th show will feature music of Vegas entertainers from the 80’s to present time and will take place at the Fairfield Glade Multi-Purpose Building on Lakeview Dr.

Just a little about these outstanding performers:

Frank Saxton and Jason Sanders are both superb musicians and they will set the mood for the show during dinner.

Both men play several instruments; Frank plays sax, clarinet, flute, keyboard and others; Jason plays keyboard, fiddle, dobro, harmonica and more.

They both are singer/songwriters and arrangers and both have spent considerable time working in Vegas.

Dennis Donald is an actor, singer, musician, recording artist and co-founder of D2.

Ashley Krohn began at the Palace in Crossville with D2 at the tender age of 18. She has really honed her skills as a singer and has been writing and recording as well. You will fall in love with her.

Terry Henderson began at the Palace in 2009 with D2 in Malt Shop Memories and stopped the show with his rendition of Mustang Sally. You’ll enjoy his smooth voice especially when he does the Platters Only You.

Terri Utsey is a late comer to performing however you would never know she wasn’t born singing and performing. She is fantastic.

Last but not least is the youngest member in the show, just turned 14 year old Cheyenne Graff.

Graff was recruited by D2 at the age of 12 and her natural ability to perform is amazing. She will be covering some of her favorite country singers that have appeared in Vegas in the last few years.

Tickets for the show are $25 each which includes tax. There will be a tip jar available for the catering/serving staff.

If you are unable to have dinner, you may buy tickets for the show only at $18 each.

This is a BYOB event and a bottle of wine from Stonehaus Winery will be given as a door prize during dinner.

On May 6, doors will open at 5:30 P.M. and dinner starts at 6. Showtiome will be at 7 P.M.

For more information and ticketing you can call 931-456-1972 or email dsquaredproductions@frontiernet.net. You may also purchase tickets at R&B Restaurant on Peavine Rd.

D2 is extremely proud to bring you East Tennessee’s best! The sooner you get tickets, the better seating available!

General Manager, Bob Weber, and the Board of Directors of Fairfield Glade Community Club (FGCC) are pleased to announce that Mary Jo Paige will join the Club next month before Memorial Day as Director of Marketing & Events.

Mary Jo and her husband, Joe, have a second home on Watts Bar Lake and will be relocating from Clearwater, Florida, where she has enjoyed a 25+ year career with several organizations that complement our lifestyle resort community at Fairfield Glade.

For 15 years, Paige held progressive positions at Bozell Worldwide (formerly Ellis & Diaz, Inc.), including her last 4 years as Executive VP, General Manager & Partner of the firm Ellis & Paige, Inc.

Ellis & Paige developed highly effective marketing programs for golf course communities, real estate development clients and other key clients’ new business platforms.

During the next four years, Paige developed and implemented marketing and advertising programs at The Plantation at Leesburg, resulting in developer build-out two years ahead of schedule. The Plantation is a resort-style, active adult golf course community where she conducted extensive competitive research, identified opportunities and developed unique campaigns targeting new retirees for the Community.

Paige added real estate sales to her many skills and not only marketed but also sold homes at Southern Hills Plantation Club, a premier 1,000-acre, gated, Pete Dye golf course community. At Southern Hills, she developed a marketing program that targeted over 300 physicians practicing in the County.

Recognizing her potential, Oak Hill Hospital soon recruited her to utilize her talents in their Marketing & Business Development Department.

The Communnity Center issued this statement:

“We were fortunate to recruit Mary Jo because her love of marketing communities surpassed her love of promoting hospitals!

“Mary Jo’s skillset in industries specific to FGCC’s needs creates a synergy with our ultimate goal to become the best resort community in TN.

“Watch for an announcement for a welcome reception in June, providing an opportunity for you to meet Mary Jo Paige.”

David Miller, D.Ph., pharmacist for the Fairfield Glade Food City, was recently named the recipient of the 2013 John McNiel Customer Service Award.

“Food City is dedicated to providing our customers with exceptional customer service and exceeding their expectations,” says Steven C. Smith, Food City president and chief executive officer. “David is a devoted pharmacist who is especially passionate about the importance of educating his customers on the proper use of their medications. He is an asset to our company and his community as a whole.”

Pictured from left to right are:Tom Geoghagan – Food City Pharmacy Professional Services Manager,; Mickey Blazer – Food City Director of Pharmacy Operations; David Miller – winner; and Ken Slagle – Food City Pharmacy Operations Manager

Each year, Food City recognizes a pharmacist from each of their two operating divisions for their outstanding customer service achievements. Miller, who was also listed in Guide to America’s Top Pharmacists 2006 issue, was named this year’s award recipient for the Knoxville Operating Division.

The award was established in honor of John McNiel, Food City’s first pharmacist. The company opened their pilot pharmacy location in Harlan, KY in 1997. McNiel’s huge success, due primarily to his outstanding customer service and care for his patients, led in large part to the company’s expansion of the pharmacy concept. Today, Food City operates 77 pharmacies throughout their 105 store supermarket chain.

“I was truly honored to receive such a prestigious award from Food City Pharmacy,” says Miller. “It came as quite a surprise to me that I was chosen over all of my highly qualified colleagues.”

With over 16 years of pharmacy experience, Miller is a graduate of Madisonville, TN High School and Hiwassee College of Monroe, TN. He received his degree from the McWhorter School of Pharmacy in Birmingham, AL. Miller is a native of Tennessee. He currently resides in Crossville with his wife of seven years and their three-year-old daughter.

“It’s a pleasure recognizing someone so dedicated to their profession,” says Mickey Blazer, Director of Pharmacy Operations for Food City.

“David has a strong desire to improve the quality of life for his patients and play a major role in their healthcare. It’s an honor to be able to present this award to David.”

Headquartered in Abingdon, Virginia, K-VA-T Food Stores, Inc. (Food City’s parent company) operates 105 retail supermarkets throughout the tri-state regions of Southeast Kentucky, Southwest Virginia and Northeast Tennessee.

COMMENTARY

By BILL PIECUCH

For The Vista

When I grocery shop, I shop. I enter the store with quick steps and buzz around the place seldom noticing or even paying attention to sales promotion, advertising and the like.

I shop at Food City for two reasons: First, convenience. Nice people and no other game in town. But secondly, the gasoline rebate helps, uh, FUEL my buzz.

Of course the discount helps. But the real joy isn’t a contented smile but rather a quiet smirk knowing 15 cents off a gallon helps my overall attitude — even though oil firms rake in billions.

It lends a small assurance and plausible logic to bravely shop when gasoline prices catapult with a sonic boom.

About a month ago the shopping magic was obliterated. And there went my good attitude.

Never fear, this story has a happy ending. But bear with me. Here’s what happened:

The Food City gasoline discount program called “Fuel Bucks”, I was told, “had changed.”

No advance notice or anything like that. The checkout people smiled politely and portrayed a sort of scripted “newer, better” program. Translated, the discount was still out there but shoppers were required to buy certain groups of items to qualify.

The new gasoline discount program had more strings attached and required a lawyer to understand. No more free-lance wandering, if you wanted the discount you had to pay studious attention.

My buzzing shopping was relegated to a slow motion museum tour experience, all the while listening to my anxious inner voice whispering “What items fit? What if I miscalculated?”

Frankly, I was outraged.

So, I expressed my views to local Food City managers and employees. To my surprise, they seemed openly sympathetic and in some cases shared my disappointment.

One employee said decades of superior customer support was sabotaged by a poor administrative decision. “They (corporate) blew it big time,” he confided.

At that moment, a question arose: “Who are these guys? Can Food City, despite their disarming Disney like behavior, really be trusted?” So my task was clear: Lend assistance that will help recapture and reform the great rebate.

It began by authoring an email via their website hoping a responsible executive would read and rethink this cumbersome program.

We all appreciate Food City being here in Fairfield Glade. The company began in 1955 and remains privately held with 104 retail food outlets in Kentucky, Virginia and Tennessee. About 16 percent of the stock is owned by employees and about 8,000 associates work in Tennessee stores. That’s commendable and the foundation of building trust and community support beyond trappings.

Food City sponsors two NASCAR events at Bristol Motor Speedway, the Spring Sprint Cup race, the Food City 500 and the Fall Nationwide Series race, the Food City 250. The company is in its 22nd year in 2013 and currently the longest race entitlement sponsor in the Sprint Cup Series.

But I didn’t like this “change” they had made to the Fuel Bucks program.

However, most impactful were informal chats with managers of both Fairfield Glade and Crossville stores. Among other things, the chats indicated a reservoir of goodwill and professionalism that define the management style of current Chief Executive Officer, Steven Smith. Steven succeeded his father and founder, Jack Smith, who passed away at age 81 in 2007. Both father and son served extended stints in the U.S. Navy.

Steven Smith, as it turns out, will randomly, and unannounced, will drop-in to a Food City location and begin bagging groceries and talking to customers. “He is the real deal,” a manager told me. “You can carry on a discussion with him without pretence. He listens.”

There is plenty of positive information regarding Food City available on the Internet. The bottom line is that a legacy of honest owners, a company involved in community works, an exciting presence in national sports and children’s events.

So, armed with a rich heritage, why change responsible promotions?

Well, I am happy to report that, following a stream of letters from Fairfield Glade and Crossville customers, Steve Smith and Food City DID listen!

A smiling employee exclaimed to me that a corporate exec recently held a meeting and, citing my email (with many others) changed the program and restored satisfying changes.

My sprightly buzz has returned.

(Bill Piecuch can be reached at wmpq@nstarpr.com)

Editor’s Note:

Food City VP of Marketing Ron Bonnaci took the time to call The Vista last week to affirm Food City’s “appreciation of Fairfield Glade and it’s residents” and added that Food City will “continue to look for ways to tweak” the Fuel Bucks Program to benefit its customers.

By KEN STEADMAN

For The Vista

It is with a great deal of sadness that the Fairfield Glade Lions Club bid farewell to Norman, a Leader Dog for the Blind. He has faithfully served his blind friend Donna Taylor and the East Tennessee community for the past six years.

Norman showed signs of Illness for several days recently. He wouldn’t eat, showed total lack of energy and laid around most of the time. Donna became very concerned and took him to the Vet. Blood tests and x-rays were taken and the doctor found that Norman’s liver was the size of a basketball. The blood tests revealed cancer of the liver. All body functions closed down and Norman died during the night.

Leader Dog Norman touched the lives of thousands of school children, teachers and other adults for the past six years. Donna and I, with the assistance of Norman, made 81 visits over the past six years to churches; senior citizens facilities; service club meetings and children and teachers in 34 elementary schools in East Tennessee communities.

Norman received many hugs and much petting as his reward for his attendance. Donna was always extremely gratified to hear children call out “There’s Norman!” when she was shopping at stories.

Norman changed Donna’s life over the past years providing her with much love, comfort and an undying trust. He was her constant companion and eyes, allowing a great deal of personal independence. Norman also saved Donna’s life on three different occasions. Donna, I, her family, friends and other household pets, will dearly miss him.

Fond memories will keep Norman alive for many years. He will never be replaced or forgotten. However, another Leader Dog will be arranged for Donna so she can continue her life as an active person. This is how the Leader Dog for the Blind Program works. Donna will have to return to Leader Dog School in Rochester, Michigan for about 6 weeks of training with a new assigned companion.

Lions Clubs around the world are the largest single financial contributor to the Leader Dog Program. The Fairfield Glade Lions Club will cover the airfare to Michigan but all other expenses are free.

Farewell and God bless you, Norman. Thanks much for being a part of so many lives.

Dear Editor:

I made a point of attending Diane Black’s Town Hall Meeting at the Palace Theater on April, 2 expecting a town hall meeting.

I was hoping that I would have a chance to participate in a discussion on the major issues going on in the U. S. Congress.

Instead she gave a campaign speech using a chart of the usual Republican talking points for about 20 minutes.

Questions were answered by the Congresswoman for the remaining 15 minutes of the meeting. She hand picked the questions off sheets of paper handed to her from a staff member.

I went on the internet and found a commonly used definition of town hall meetings and this is what I found. A town hall meeting is an American term given to an informal public meeting, function, or event derived from the traditional town meetings of New England.

Typically open to everybody in a town community and held at the local municipal building, attendees generally may voice their opinions and ask questions of the public figures, elected officials, or political candidates at the town hall.

I openly admit that I am a registered Democrat and that I did not vote for Diane Black, but she is my congresswoman and I felt it was important to attend and take this opportunity to voice some of my concerns regarding Cumberland County and the country.

I felt so strongly about this event that I convinced fellow Democrats and other Cumberland County voters to attend with me. I’m embarrassed that I not only wasted my time but the time of my friends by attending this sham of a town hall meeting.

At the end of the meeting I tried to ask her about poverty in Cumberland County and her views on the minimum wage and the fact that you are living in poverty if you earn minimum wage.

She said that the minimum wage is only a starting point for most. That was the end of the discussion as she was surrounded by supporters and I left.

Town Hall meetings are a part of what makes American democracy so unique and a part of our history. We can not allow our elected officials to get away with hosting these political functions and calling them town hall meetings, it’s disrespectful to our democratic tradition.

Fairfield Glade

Dear Editor:

Tiger Woods (see 4/16 issue of The Vista, page 1A) should have called an official over to assure he dropped correctly but in a fit of passion on just what happened, he hurridly dropped a second ball and played again.

I questioned that drop (as I am sure many others did) as the divot from the previous drop was still visible and his drop was 4 or 5 feet away from it.

Still more amazing was that all the analysts and rules experts at Augusta saw the same “violation” and said or did nothing to correct the violation before he finished the round and signed the card.

What TV replay were they looking at? Apparently nobody wanted to step up and challenge Woods.

Only after Woods suggested later in an interview that he might have dropped incorrectly (guilt feelings?) did tournament officials now feel comfortable in reviewing the drop.

By that time, with the card already signed and a DQ imminent, officials had to turn to a “cop-out” rule 33-7 in order to keep Woods in the tournament.

For The Vista

For approximately a year now, Fairfield Glade Resident Services (FGRS) has been offering two separate programs for all residents of the Glade at the FGRS Center offices on Peavine Rd.

Many people have taken advantage of the “Ask the Lawyer” program and the presence of a Medicare Information Specialist sponsored by SHIP.

Please be advised of a slight change in these programs:

For those interested in speaking privately with an attorney, free of charge, concerning any legal issues please call (931)-200 2346 and make an appointment with Melanie Shada for the third Monday of the month.

Dave Shippert, another local attorney, is meeting with a small group of residents on the second Saturday of each month to discuss the topic of Elder Law and how it may affect you.

Once again call (931)-200-2346 to schedule your visit with Mr. Shippert. Both these attorneys are donating their time to help you learn how to become legally savvy as our legal system continually changes.

Evelyne Kornreich, a Medicare Information Specialist is available several times a month to discuss the ramifications of Medicare and to show you how to manage your health insurance in these evolving times.

Appointments are highly suggested and can be made by calling (877) 801-0044.

Don’t be in the dark when you receive all those Medicare Supplemental Insurance advertisements, let Kornreich help you to solve the problem of what level of coverage fits your needs.

Kornreich can also answer any questions you have regarding benefits and coverage. If she doesn’t have the answer on the tip of her tongue, she knows exactly where to find the answers for you.

Take advantage of these two programs and remember the FGRS Motto, “Together, We Can Enhance Our Quality of Life”.

Visit our website at www.fairfieldglade.cc, click on Lifestyles, and then in the left hand column click on Fairfield Glade Resident Services Corp.

Tiger Woods gave himself an advantage he was not allowed to take. That is the end-all of what happened at the Masters last Friday afternoon.

As I write this on Saturday afternoon prior to The Vista going to press for this issue, I am at a disadvantage — because I don’t know if Woods rallied from behind to win the tournament or not.

But I will say this: If he did, you could look at it two ways, depending on your point of view: 1) What great resilience it took from Woods to overcome a two-stroke penalty assessed to him for “playing from the wrong place” after taking a drop on the Par 5, 15th hole. Or 2), an asterisk should immediately be placed in the record books on said accomplishment.

Sure, it was very unfortunate that Woods hit the flag on his third shot and that the ball caromed backward off the green and into the creek. But bad breaks happen in golf and the two-stroke penalty was deserved.

Some would argue, in fact, that Woods was fortunate — even being shown favor by the tournament committee that decided NOT to disqualify him for signing an inaccurate scorecard.

Here was their reasoning offered in an official statement:

“In preparation for his fifth shot, the player dropped his ball in close proximity to where he had played his third shot in apparent conformance with Rule 26. After being prompted by a television viewer, the Rules Committee reviewed a video of the shot while he was playing the 18th hole. At that moment and based on that evidence, the Committee determined he had complied with the Rules.

“After he signed his scorecard, and in a television interview subsequent to the round, the player stated that he played further from the point than where he had played his third shot. Such action would constitute playing from the wrong place.

“The subsequent information provided by the player’s interview after he had completed play warranted further review and discussion with him this morning. After meeting with the player, it was determined that he had violated Rule 26, and he was assessed a two stroke penalty. The penalty of disqualification was waived by the Committee under Rule 33 as the Committee had previously reviewed the information and made its initial determination prior to the finish of the player’s round.”

Interesting — a TV viewer called in Woods’ mistake (only in golf does this happen … I mean, next time I see a traveling on LeBron James that is not called, should I call? Would anything get changed?) … I digress.

So, Woods hit his next approach from two yards further back to gain an advantage. It’s hard to understand how officials did not determine he did this on purpose considering he had hit the flagstick from the previous spot and obviously didn’t want to do that again. He even admitted this much after his round in a TV interview.

He finished with a bogey-6 initially and signed what turned out to be an incorrect scorecard. Normally, signing an incorrect scorecard would be an automatic DQ but the rules were amended in 2011 so that penalties could be assessed later without disqualifying the player. For example, in the case of a TV viewer saw an infraction and called it in.

That’s all fine and good, but this surely gives the appearance of favoritism in behalf of Woods. Without Woods, after all, TV ratings may be effected. Did the Committee found an “out” for him?

But, if true that the powers-that-be had already determined BEFORE Woods had finished his round that he had not broken any rules, Woods absolutely should not have been hit with a DQ.

The problem I have, and other golf analysts like Brandel Chamblee on the Golf Channel and Rick Reilly of CBS, is Woods KNEW at some point — either when he did it or later — that he had gained an unfair advantage.

As Chamblee said, “He unknowingly broke a rule but knowingly gained an advantage.

“This is a flagrant, obvious violation,” Chamblee added. “If Tiger has read the rule — and I am sure he has by now — it is incumbent upon him to say that he is in violation of [Rule] 26-1a and disqualify himself. Anything else, frankly, is unacceptable.”

I would have to agree. Though Woods perhaps did not deserve a disqualification given the circumstances, I think he should have withdrawn from the tournament himself. This would have shown that the integrity of the game is greater than his quest to win more major championships.

“I’m a fan of Tiger Woods and a huge fan of golf,” Chamblee said. “This is going to be the most controversial thing that follows him around for the rest of his career.”

It makes me wonder what other players would have done? What would Nicklaus, Player or Palmer had done?

As an aside, if the rules committee used their own discretion to allow Woods to continue playing, why didn’t rules official use the same discretion with 14-year-old Tianlang Guan?

Guan captured the imagination of golf fans everywhere by becoming the youngest player ever to qualify for the Masters. He was fighting to make the cut when he was given a 1-stroke penalty for slow play at the 17th hole Friday.

When asked about Guan’s penalty and its fairness, Woods was quoted, “Rules (are) rules.”

So is doing the right thing the right thing. In other words, Woods — who suffered a huge public relations black eye after his very public marital mess — could have shown great integrity by withdrawing. This would have honored the game more than winning at all costs.

Ignorance of the rules is no excuse and it doesn’t matter if it was on purpose or not. We all make mistakes. And many of his peers have broken rules just as unknowingly as Woods and then opted to withdraw.

And that’s why I believe Woods’ real victory would have been to stand up and say, in effect, “I made a mistake — didn’t do it maliciously — but I feel I should withdraw.”

All the details aside, Woods had a chance to make a gesture that says he is not bigger than the game, that dozens of his fellow pro players have withdrawn over the years on the face of similar situations, and he chose not to.

He should have withdrawn because he could, not because he had to. But I don’t think it ever crossed his mind to do so.
