Upchurch to speak

How much more timely could this meeting be?  The growing season on the Plateau has arrived and Gregg Upchurch, Cumberland County Agriculture Agent, will be the guest speaker at the April meeting of Plateau Chapter #297, Korean War Veterans Association.

All residents of Cumberland and surrounding counties are invited to bring their problems to be solved by Mr Upchurch.

The meeting will begin at 1 P.M. on Wednesday, April 12, at the Fairfield Glade Community & Conference Center on Stonehenge Drive, just a few blocks north of the four way stop.

Questions or driving directions will be handled by Cmdr Gene Stone at 931-484-4610.  If you think you know what A D R is, keep it to yourself until the meeting!!!

The Korean War Vets will have a short business meeting after Mr. Upchurch has spoken and solved everybody’s growing problems!!!  At that time, the respondents may leave or stay and observe the process of this meeting!

Neighbors/Newcomers to meet on April 27

Neighbor’s and Newcomer’s  will meet again on April 27th at Clyde York POW Camp, 62 4-H Center Drive, Crossville.

Doors open at 10:45 A.M. The bsiness meeting starts at 11:30 with lunch at Noon.  Menu for this month is Turkey, mashed potatoes, gravy, vegetable, salad bar, chocolate cake and drinks.  Come hungry because these ladies know how to cook!  Cost of lunch is $14. Heart Smart is available only when requested with your reservation.

Reservations and cancellations need to be in by Sat. April 22nd.  If you do not cancel by then you are responsible for payment of your meal.  Call Pat at 931-210-3742 to make reservations.

Come join in the fun of our  SILENT AUCTION.  Members bring items to donate and you can bid on as many items as you wish.  Make sure you have room in your vehicle to take it all home.  This is our biggest fund raiser of the year so we hope you will come out and support your Club.  New or Gently used items, plants, books, games, dishes etc.  Please NO Clothing!

Volunteer Coin Club to Meet April 11

The Volunteer Coin Club of Crossville will hold their regular  meeting on  Tuesday,  at 6:30 P.M. April 11.

The meetings are held at the 127 Senior Center located at 1460 South Main Street (Highway 127 South). Meetings are held on the second Tuesday of each month.  Visitors and guests are welcome.

Civil War discussed

Do you believe the American Civil War was a significant event in our nation’s history?  Are you interested in learning more about it?  If so, you are encouraged to email Dick Sammer, a Glade resident, at [email protected] to express your interest in the formation of a Civil War Round Table in Fairfield Glade.

The purpose of a Round Table is to gather periodically to hear historians speak about the Civil War, to meet the authors of books about the CW, to plan occasional trips to TN Civil War battlefields, and to form study groups to discuss a variety of topics related to this nation-shaping event.  A date, time, and place for an initial meeting will be announced if there is sufficient interest.

Republicans set to meet

The Cumberland County Republican Women’s Club will hold their monthly meeting on April 6 at 5:00 pm at the Republican Headquarters.

Their plans will be finalized for our Trash and Treasure Sale on April 27 and 28 and our food sales for The Great Appalachian Homesteading Conference on May 6.

They will need everyone’s help as the folks who are conducting the Homesteading Conference expect 500 to 600 folks. For more information about becoming a vendor at the Trash and Treasure sale, call 931-788-2173.

Garden show scheduled

The Cumberland County Master Gardeners Association has announced the lineup of speakers for its fifteenth annual Flower & Garden Show, April 21-22 at the Cumberland County Fairgrounds.

The show opens at 10 a.m. on Friday and runs until 6 P.M. On Saturday, hours are 9 A.M. to 5 P.M.

Admission is $3 and is good for both days. Many of the speakers’ topics reflect the theme of this year’s horticultural extravaganza: “Bees, Buds & Butterflies.”

Friday at 11:30 A.M., Jason Reeves will discuss “Great Garden Plants for Attracting Pollinators.” At 1 P.M.., Don Hazel’s topic will be “Mason Bees and Bluebirds.” At 2:30, Jason Reeves is back with his “One Man’s Trash is Another’s Treasure” presentation; and at 4 P.M.., don’t miss Monica Hackett’s “Landscape Design for Pollinators” talk.

On Saturday, the speaking program begins at 9:30 A.M. with noted local beekeeper Sheila Ray discussing “Honey Bees.” At 11 A.M., Ron Daniels takes the stage; his topic is “Building and Caring for a Rose Garden.” Then at 1 P.M., Jeff Harvey will talk about “Conifers”; at 2:15, Bill Morgan’s topic is “Native Plants.” Rounding out the speaking program at 3:30 P.M. is Dr. Tom Samples’ presentation, “Have You Seen This in Your Yard?”

In addition to the schedule of informative and entertaining speakers, the Flower & Garden Show will feature dozens of gardening-related vendors, kids’ activities (including a coloring contest), the perennially popular Ask-a-Master Gardener information area, a silent auction and tomato-plant sales.

Growing info offered

Get free information on growing in Tennesee on Wednesday, April 12, starting at 1 P.M. at the Fairfield Glade Community & Conference Center on Stonehenge Drive.

Cumberland County Agriculture Agent, Gregg Upchurch will be doing a presentation on growing plants in Tennessee.  If you think you know everything already, try this seminar and you will realize what you did not know.  It is FREE to all.

Hospice to celebrate with Chocolate Fest

Mark your calendars and make your reservations now for Saturday, April 22 at Stone Memorial High School from 2 to 4 P.M. for the Spring Chocolate Fest celebrating Hospice of Cumberland County.

The Guest Speaker for this event will be Judy Flickinger a retired registered nurse and author.  Judy spent the last 12 of her 42-year career serving in hospice care.

A sumptuous afternoon of chocolate delights is being planned for all of our enjoyment.  Envision a flowing fountain of chocolate with fruits and treats for dipping.

Additionally, handmade truffles, torts, cakes, cookies, fudge and various delicacies will be available to nibble on.

Tickets for this event are available at:  Hospice of Cumberland County, 30 East Adams St; The Village Green Mall in Fairfield at Both Collage and Brownstones; and from all FG Hospice Auxiliary Members.

Corvette group meets

The Plateau Corvette Club meets on the first Thursday of every month and it’s next meeting is Thursday April 6th at 5:30 P.M. at the Crossville Outlet Center Meeting room.

New for April we will have a Tech session at 5:30 and the meeting will start at 6 P.M.

Celtics change slate

Please note that the  Celtic Cousins will NOT be meeting on Tuesday, April 4.  Instead, they will be celebrating two Celtic holidays, Tartan Day and Robert Burn’s Dinner, on Saturday, April 22 at the Hiawatha Club in Lake Tansi.

Kinseekers doing WW1 research on April 6.

On Thursday, April 6, from 1 to 3:00 (CT), the Kinseekers will meet in the Fellowship Hall of the Fairfield Glade Community Church, 521 Snead Drive, for their regular monthly meeting.

Their guest speaker will be Allison Griffey, from the Tennessee State Library and Archives in Nashville, who will speak on “Tennessee’s World War 1 Gold Star Records,” as well as sharing some additional WW1 genealogy resources.

If you have ancestors who served during WW1, this is a ‘Must Attend’ program.  Much has been discussed lately about WW11, but, you hear and read little about the 1st World War.

Backyard Birders meet

Anyone interested in learning about local birds is welcome to attend the Fairfield Glade Backyard Birders Meeting on Tuesday, April 4th at the Library/Multipurpose Building on Lakeside Drive near Legends starting at 3 P.M.

The topic “Improving Backyard Birding Skills” will be presented by Don and Linda Eppelheimer. You will learn how to find, see and name many different songbirds in this area.

Many of these birds are migrating through and others are year round residents. If you have them, bring binoculars as well as Smart phone, IPAD or tablet.

Learn how to use the free app, Merlin from Cornell Labs, to identify birds by sight and/or sound with your device. There is no charge for this meeting but there will be a 50/50 raffle available to help defray costs.

Korean vets host event

Having troubles growing things in Cumberland County???

Save the date—Wednesday, April 12!  Plateau Chapter #297, Korean War Veterans Association will be hosting County Agriculture Agent, Gregg Upchurch, to answer any questions that day concerning growing in our county.

Everybody is invited to this timely get together as we kick off the spring/summer growing season.  The meeting begins at 1 P.M., at the Fairfield Glade Community & Conference Center on Stonehenge Drive.

Fashion Show slated

The April 20th CWC Luncheon at the Discovery Center will feature a Spring Fashion Show with ladies modeling clothing from Elite Repeats.

The speaker will be Harolyn Benjamin from Enterprise, Alabama.  She is a motivational speaker and talk show host.

CPR class offered

There will be a BLS (Healthcare Provider) CPR class on Saturday, April 15th, at 9 A.M. at Small Biz Staffing (behind Long John Silvers & across from Regions Bank in downtown Crossville).

The cost will be $35 per person & must be paid when signing up for the class.

There will also be a First Aid Class on the same day, same location beginning at 1:30 P.M.

The cost for this class will be $25 per person & must be paid when signing up for the class.

Free Tax Prep offered

Liberty Tax Service is accepting donations to support the important work being done by A Time 4 Paws. During the month of March, Liberty Tax Service will offer free tax preparation to new customers who donate Diamond Dog Food, Purina Cat Food, treats, litter, toys, or even cleaning supplies or copy paper to A Time 4 Paws when they have their taxes done at the Liberty Tax Service office located at 800 N. Main Street, Crossville, TN.

Liberty Tax Service will provide free tax preparation through March 31 for new customers who bring donations for A Time 4 Paws when they come to Liberty Tax Service near Dairy Queen for professional tax preparation with an accuracy guarantee.

Liberty Tax does take appointments, however, they are not necessary.

The Cumberland County United Fund will host a Non-Profit Workshop Series, presented by SCORE, with the dates and topics listed as follows:

April 19th – Board Development; May 17th – Financial Management; August 10th – Marketing; November 9th – Strategic Planning.

Fun, socializing, dancing

Whether you are new to the area or have just never thought of joining a dance club, New Generation Dance Club may be the fun opportunity for you.

They offer four dinner dances a year for those who enjoy foxtrots, line dancing, swing, waltz, cha-cha, rumba and rock and roll dancing.  These dances are spread out throughout the year and take place at the Fairfield Glade Community and Conference Center, on a wonderful dance floor.  Any level of dancing is fine!  They welcome new members and guests.

Each dinner dance includes a cash bar, three-course dinner and live music from professional bands.  Events begin with a social hour at 5:30 P.M.  Dinner and dancing start at 6:30 P.M. and continue until 9 P.M.

UCHRA program invite

UCHRA would like to invite anyone 55 years or older who meets the eligibility guidelines to be a part of our Senior Community Service Employment Program (SCSEP).

This program provides on-the-job training for older individuals seeking gainful employment in the Upper Cumberland region.

Marathon Pinochle to continue through May

Want to meet new people, old friends , and enjoy playing Pinochle? Now is the time to enroll for our 2016-2017 season. Play began last September, and ends in May.

There is a game for each month, and schedules can be arranged to play any mutually convenient date.

Each team plays 9 games, which are alternately at your or your opponent’s homes. Cost per season is $11 per person, $22 per team which covers prizes and club expenses.

Prizes are awarded at a catered luncheon in June. This year’s event will be held at Fairfield Glade Community Church on June 10, 2017.
