AARP offering driver safety program

The AARP Smart Driver Course, a classroom refresher course designed for older drivers, will be offered at the Art Circle Public Library, 3 East Street, Crossville

The eight-hour course will be given in two consecutive morning sessions on Thursday, October 9,  and Friday, October 10,  from 8:30 A.M. to 12:30 P.M. on both days.  Membership in AARP is not required to attend.

Through a grant from Toyota, AARP Driver Safety collaborated with the nation’s top experts in mobility, aging, technology, and vehicle and driver safety to develop the AARP Smart Driver Course, which was launched on January 1.

Pre-registration for the course is required.  Call Julian Kmiec, a volunteer AARP Driver Safety instructor, at (931) 484-9027 to enroll.

Cost for the class is $15 per person for AARP members, or $20 per person for non-members, payable by check to “AARP” at the first session.  Class size is limited, so call soon to procure your place in this valuable class.

Kinseekers meet Sept. 4

The next KINSEEKERS meeting is scheduled for September 4, at 1 P.M. at the  Fairfield Glade Community Church, 521 Snead Dr.

Everyone is who is interested in genealogy is invited to to our monthly meetings.  This month Cathy Tipton will discuss Collateral and Cluster Genealogy: No Man is an Island.

Their meetings are open to everyone who is interested in genealogy (the why’s, the how to’s or the where to go’s) . If you decide to join the group it only costs $10. for the year.  Any questions, feel free to contact Erin at 456-8367.

 

Someone you care for have a mental illness

Classes are being offered for family and friends of individuals with a major mental illness on eight consecutive Wednesday evenings, 6 to 8:30 P.M., beginning on September 17, and ending on November 5.

With Hope in Mind is support and education for family members and friends who have a loved one with bipolar disorder (manic depression), major depression, schizophrenia, obsessive compulsive disorder, anxiety and/or other disorders.

The With Hope in Mind is a FREE eight-session course provided by NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) of Cumberland Plateau that provides the practical and emotional support you need as a caretaker of someone with a mental illness or disorder.

With Hope in Mind offers helpful skill-building classes, such a problem management, communication and crisis planning, and provides you with immediate coping skills for dealing with the different cycles of each illness.  With Hope in Mind offers both education and support and courses are taught by trained family members.

Charity motorcyle ride slated for Sept. 20

The United Fund 2nd Annual Charity Ride on September 20 offers motorcyclists an opportunity to experience the beginning of fall while supporting the Cumberland County United Fund.

Starting at Tommy’s Motorsports at 550 Crabtree Rd with 9 A.M. registration, with the ride to begin promptly at 10 A.M.

The route will be announced that morning, the ride will include beautiful scenery celebrating fall on the Plateau,  not to mention you can feel good about helping the United Fund’s 36 partner agencies.

Proceeds will benefit the United fund’s partner agencies they provide programs and services that touch lives right here in Cumberland County.

The cost to join the ride is $10 per person.  Please register  by September 19 or you can register the day of the event. Registration will begin at  Tommy’s Motorsports lot at 9:00 am.  There will be prizes and a gourmet hot dog bar following  the ride.

 

3rd Annual Plateau Alzheimer’s Walk set

Alzheimer’s Tennessee is planning a walk on Saturday, Sept 13, at the Carl T. Duer Soccer Complex.

There will be fun and activities for adults, kids and pets.  Registration is a 9am, Opening ceremonies at 10 A.M. with the Walk at 11 A.M.

Spay-Ghetti” Time

There’s still time to enjoy the ever-popular Wags and Whiskers “Spay-Ghetti” fundraising event at Genesis Italian Grille on Interstate Dr. in Crossville.

Tickets are good for lunch or dinner anytime in the month of August and include Genesis’ great spaghetti and meatballs, salad, bread and a drink.

Tickets are $10, with the proceeds going to help provide low-cost pay/neuter of dogs and cats in the community.  Wags and Whiskers has funded over 8,600 of these surgeries so far but needs help reaching their 2014 goal of over 1,300.

Tickets are available at the Bed and Biscuit Kennel off Peavine Rd., Happy Hound Realty near the Peavine Rd. Dollar General store and at the Duplicate store on the four-lane at Chuckles Dr.

Plateau Photography Club Meeting slated

The Club will meet this month on Thursday, August 28th at 1 P.M. at the Fairfield Glade Community Church.

Members will bring images of “Reflections” to show and discuss.  The Club is a special interest group of the Plateau PC Users Group.

Visitors and prospective new members are always welcome.

Last chance dance set

Saturday, Sept. 6,  will be the last Hebbertsburg Community Center Dinner/Dance of the season.

The dinner, home-cooked spaghetti and meat sauce, with bread and a beverage, is just $6 a person.  Desserts and additional beverages $1.

They start serving the meal at 5 P.M. (CDT) and the music and dancing is from 5:30 to 8:30.

There is an admission donation of $3:00 for adults, while children 16 and under are free. The monies collected are used to pay the band and for general maintenance of the Community Center.  All the workers are volunteers.

The entertainment for September 6 is being provided by the ever popular City Lites. Marty Gibson from Cookeville (guitar and vocals), Flavie Miller from Sparta (guitar and vocals), Glen Holverson from Crossville (‘talking’ saxaphone) and Wade England from Crossville (drums) specialize in classic country, easy rock, bluegrass, jazz and soft waltzes; actually, they can play whatever you ask for.

The Hebbertsburg Community Center is located about 5 miles north of the 4-Way Stop on Peavine Road in Fairfield Glade. Hunt set for Sept. 5

The 2014 Fairfield Glade Treasure Hunt is set for Friday, SEPT. 5TH. Have a fun evening solving puzzles and figuring out clues. The Hunt is limited to 20 cars with 4 people per car. Call information below on what to bring.

Volunteer Coin Club to Meet September  9

The Volunteer Coin Club of Crossville will hold their regular meeting on Tuesday, September  9 at 6:30 P.M.

Plateau Corvette Club sets meeting Sept. 4

The Plateau Corvette Club invites all area Corvette owners to its monthly meeting held on the first Thursday of the month at 5:30 P.M.

The meeting location is at the Crossville Outlet Mall at 228 Interstate Drive.  The meeting room is on the north side of the outlet.

Fairfield Glade Treasure Bible Study planned

A new women’s Bible study will be starting on September 3 from 10 to 11:30 A.M. in the Fellowship Hall of Fairfield Glade First Baptist Church.

This will be a 12-week study on the book of Romans. This study is open to any woman, regardless of church membership, so come and join them as they discuss all the vital topics the Apostle Paul addresses in this very important New Testament book.

Homesteads Apple Festival Crafts Show Applications Available

Homesteads Apple Festival in Crossville, TN is now taking applications for artists and craftsmen for the Sept. 27 and 28, 2014 Homesteads Apple Festival Crafts Show.

Spaces are 12 ft. X 12 ft. and cost $50.

Show is limited to only artists and craftsmen who handcraft their merchandise.  Application must be received before deadline of August 29.

 

The FOL “Bling Sale,” Cool Thoughts for a Warm August

The FOL Bling Sale will not happen until Saturday, December 13.

However, now is a great time to consider clearing your jewelry box of long unworn, unappealing, “I definitely need some new kind of jewelry!”

Also, if you have sold jewelry at a garage sale and have leftovers; think of donating the remainder to the FOL Bling Sale.

Drop off your donations at the Fairfield Glade Village Mall across from Kroger or at the Library in downtown Crossville.

Your donations are greatly appreciated and will help fund books and needed improvements to our Cumberland County Art Circle Library. Let’s all keep it one of the best libraries in Tennessee.

 

Apply for Ms. Senior  County Pageant 

Applications are currently being accepted for the 2014.  Ms. Senior Cumberland County  “Age of Elegance” Pageant.

This year’s ladies will be judged on Philosophy of Life, Evening Gown, Interview, and Community Involvement.

Wednesday August 27, 2014.  Applications are currently available at the Fair Park Senior Center, located at 1433 Livingston.

The contest is held during Senior Day at the Fair.

 

Pioneer Day announces Entertainment Sign Up

The 30th Annual Pioneer Day is looking for Musical singers and groups for this year’s outdoor stages.

Country, Bluegrass, R&B and Gospel, there are few spots still open.  The event will be held on Saturday Sept. 13th.

Marathon Pinochle set

Want to meet new people, old friends, and enjoy playing pinochle? Now is the time to enroll for the 2014-2015 season. Play begins in early September and ends next May.

They play single deck with the opening bid of 16, dealer gets stuck at 15.

Games are scheduled monthly (but can be played at any mutually convenient date for you and your opponent).

Each team plays nine games, which are alternately at your or your opponent’s homes.

Cost per season is $11per person, $22 per couple which covers prizes and club expenses. Prizes sre awarded at a catered luncheon in June.

This year’s event will be held on Saturday June 13.,2015. Details will be provided at a later date.
