What does Black Girl Magic mean? This is a phrase that has evolved and is now used to celebrate the wonder that is black women. Magic is the power of influencing the course of events by using mysterious or supernatural forces.
Black Girl Magic: Shining through Spirituals and Classical Music draws from the black woman’s strength, beauty, courage, talent and audacity, honoring the powerful contributions made by African American women in these genres.

A winner of many national awards, Jayme has been a resident artist with The Atlanta Opera since 2013, singing lead roles in their community outreach tours, and representing the company in collaborations with various Atlanta-based arts organizations, including The High Museum, The Alliance Theater and the Museum of Design Atlanta. She sang in the company’s season preview concert Opera with an Edge, and participated in the 24 Hour Opera Project©.
As a Sergeant in the U.S. Army Reserves, Ms. Alilaw has sung for military ceremonies throughout the United States and Middle East. She was also a featured performer at the African-American Art Song Alliance Conference in 2012 and has been asked to return this year. She will be accompanied by equally talented Atlanta pianist Brittney Boykin, and one of our own Playhouse favorites, Michael Ruff.
There is no need to buy tickets – the program is free and is open to everyone. Seating is on a first-come, first-served basis. A freewill donation at the door is suggested but not required.
