Volunteer Coin Club to Meet February 11

The Volunteer Coin Club of Crossville will hold their regular meeting on Tuesday, February 11 at 6:30 pm.

The meetings are held at the 127 Senior Center located at 1460 South Main Street (Highway 127 South).

Meetings are held on the second Tuesday of each month.  Visitors and guests are welcome.  Contact Mike Puhl (456-0397) or Franc Conner (337-1247) for information.

 

Washington’s Birthday celebration scheduled

Did you know that Lord Cornwallis called George Washington the “Old Fox”?  Did you know that George Washington and Robert E. Lee were third cousins twice removed?

Or did you know that George Washington’s Motto was “Deeds not Words”?

On Friday February 21,   the Crab-Orchard Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution will celebrate the birthday of our first President with cherry pie and coffee at the First National Bank on Peavine Road in Fairfield Glade.  Come and help them celebrate from 1 to 4 P.M.

 

United Fund taking  grant applications

The United Fund of Cumberland County is now taking grant applications from 501 c 3 non-profits human services agencies for  the 2015 funding year.

Grant applications may be picked up at the United Fund office at 348 Taylor Street Suite 101, or by emailing [email protected].

There will be an allocation application meeting at the United Fund office on February 4, at 4 P.M. to learn more about the process.

Allocation submissions are due by noon on March 28. For more information please call 931-484-4082.

 

New SilverSneaker  exercise classes in FFG

The Fair Park Senior Center in Crossville is proud to be hosting and bringing exciting new exercise classes to Fairfield Glade.

SilverSneakers® is a fun, energizing program used across the United States that helps older adults take greater control of their health by encouraging physical activity and offering social events. Three different types of new classes will be offered which will be lead by Physical Fitness Specialist, Clintina Simms.

These exercise programs will be held at the Fairfield Glade Community Church on Snead Drive.

SilverSneakers® Classic — Have fun and move to the music through a variety of exercises designed to increase muscular strength, range of movement and activities for daily living.

This class will start Monday February 3 at 1:45 P.M. and will also be held on Fridays at 1:45 P.M.

SilverSneakers® Circuit — Combine fun with fitness to increase your cardiovascular and muscular endurance power with a standing circuit workout.

This class will start Monday February 3 at 12:30 P.M. to 1:30 P.M., and will also be held on Fridays at 12:30 P.M.

SilverSneakers® Yoga —  will move your whole body through a complete series of seated and standing yoga poses.

This class will start on Thursday, February 6 at 1 P.M.

All classes are $2 unless you have a SilverSneaker® card provide by your insurance provider.

Please bring a bottle of water, and wear tennis shoes with backs.

Tme to join the New Generation Dance Club

The New Generation Dance Club was started in 1990 to provide an evening of sociability, dancing, fellowship and expanded friendship.  They meet four times per year in March, May, October and December on the second Tuesday of these months.

A one time non-refundable fee of $35 per couple also includes your dues for the current year.

The Dance Club’s gathering featuresa social hour starting at 5:30 P.M.with dinner served at 6:30 P.M., and dancing continuing until 9:30 P.M.

Their dances are held at the Fairfield Glade Community Conference Center and dress is usually smart casual or dressy.

Dance committees are volunteers from the membership who plan the theme and menu, plus act as hosts and hostesses for a selected dance.  Invitations with menu selections are mailed to the membership six weeks prior to each dance.

Guests may attend a dance and consider joining our dance club.  If you wish to sit with friends you can make table reservations.

If you wish to make new friends you will be seated accordingly.  Invitation responses are returned to the club Vice President along with a check, meal selections and seating preference.

If you are new to this area, this is a great way to meet people.  Or, if you are a longtime resident and looking for a nice evening out, plan to attend our next New Generation Dance Club event on Tuesday, March 11.

One Step Beyond event scheduled for Feb. 6

Mark your calendar for One Step Beyond’s first luncheon of 2014. They will meet at Beef and Barrel in Crossville at noon, Thursday, Feb.6.

One Step Beyond is a club that meets every other month at a local restaurant for enjoyable get togethers for those that are 50 plus years of age who are alone, i.e., (single, widows, widowers, etc.).

The guest speaker will be Linda Yates McCully of Linda Yates Travel.

Reservations are required for their luncheon and they hope you can attend. If you plan to attend, call in no later than Friday January 31. Jane Webb 931-210-8841, Lillie Fondell 707-7558 or Bobbye Bitto 707-8607 will be able to take your reservations.

Order from the menu and receive separate checks.  They will publish the yearly calendar of events at a later date so look for the events calendar for this year and mark your calendars. For questions about the club call any of the three names mentioned above.

 

CLC hosts Women’s Retreat in February

On Wednesday, Feb. 12, the Christ Lutheran Church Women will host a full-day retreat from 10 A.M. to 3 P.M.

Registration will begin at 9:30 a.m. The $20 registration fee also includes the cost of lunch.

Checks should be made payable to CLC Women of the ELCA and sent to Christ Lutheran Church, 481 Snead Drive, Fairfield Glade, TN.

All are welcome to join us for this inspirational workshop, Stories for the Journey, which is focused on the presence and power of biblical stories, faith stories, and personal stories. For the retreat, each participant is encouraged to bring an object (a memento of one’s own personal faith journey).

The day’s presenter, Judy Aebischer, is a member of the Network of Biblical Storytellers, who has passions for storytelling of all kinds.  Having graduate degrees in both literature and biblical studies, she spent 20 years in adult education program development in congregational and synodical settings.  She has now retired from her position as Associate in Ministry of the ELCA.

 

Hoop Shoot Fundraiser set at Palace Theatre

Elks Lodge #2751 will have a fundraiser, featuring Robert Keever, an Elvis impersonator from the Country Tonight Theater in Pigion Forge, TN.  The performance will be at the Palace Theater, Saturday, Feb. 8 at 7 P.M.

Tickets may be purchased at the Palace Theater or by calling 484-6133.  Tickets are $15 for adults and $8 for 12 and under.

The proceeds help defray the cost of the 2013-14 “Hoop Shoot” expenses, such as shirts, plaques, gas for travel to District, and physical education equipment to the participating Cumberland County Elementary P.E. departments.

 

Bible Study Tech Kick-Off is ongoing

Register now for the upcoming Bible Study Tech class, “Why Do You Believe That?” with teacher, Mary Jo Sharp.

The class began on Monday, Jan. 6 and will end Feb. 24.  Bible Study Tech classes are held at the Fairfield Glade United Methodist Church.

Mary Jo Sharp is a former atheist from the Pacific Northwest who thought religion was for the weak-minded. She now holds a Masters in Christian Apologetics from Biola University and is the first woman to become a Certified Apologetics Instructor.  She has a teacher’s heart, a love for God and a desire to help Christians share God’s truth with gentleness and respect.

Bible Study Tech, or as it is also known, Bible Tech, is a women’s inter-denominational Bible study that just celebrated its10th anniversary in September.

The cost of $20 covers our member workbooks.  We also support local missions with any surplus funds that are given.

Beginning Jan. 22 at 6 P.M.. each Wednesday we will be starting a support group called “DivorceCare”.  This event will be sponsored by Fairfield Glade First Baptist Church

Its Spay-Ghetti Time

It’s time again for the ever-popular Wags and Whiskers “SpayGhetti” fundraising event at Genesis Italian Grille Restaurant on Interstate Dr. in Crossville.

Tickets are good at lunch or dinner anytime in the month of February, 2014 and include great spaghetti, meat balls, salad, bread and a drink.

You get all that for only $10 and the proceeds go to help provide low-cost spay/neuter of dogs and cats in our community.

Tickets are available at the Bed and Biscuit Kennel off Peavine Rd, Happy Hound Realty in Fairfield Glade and the Duplicate store on the 4-lane across from Crossville Tile and Flooring (at Chuckles Dr).

Fruit on its way soon

February is the next month that the new citrus fruit will be coming from Florida and California.  Available fruit in February will be:  Florida Navel Oranges at $33 and $18 for large and small boxes, respectively; Ruby Red Grapefruit at $29 and $16 for large and small boxes, respectively; Florida Seedless Mandarins at $8 a 5 lb bag, also available in 40 lb. boxes; and the variety pack small box at $24 per box.
