2012 Lifetime Learning Fall Classes Available

Mark your calendar now. Registration for Lifetime Learning will be Tuesday,

August 7, 1-2 P.M. at the Community and Conference Center on Stonehenge Dr.

in Fairfield Glade. Please note the time change. All classes are available to

Fairfield Glade residents for a one time registration fee of $12.  Some classes

may require an additional fee.

Lifetime Learning will begin Monday September 10, 9-10 A.M. with an introduction to

our local military museum presented by Anita Boring, Director of Crossville’s Military

History Museum.  She will provide information about displays of all our wars

from the Civil War to the Iraq War. Class will continue through October 15.

Monday September 24; October 8,15, 22; 1-2:30 P.M., Stacey Bryant will teach Faithbooking.

Faithbooking gives  you the opportunity to share your journey of faith with children

and grandchildren. You will make a book which will include favorite hymns and scriptures

as well as  faith-challenging events in your life.

Monday October 8-November 5; 10:30-noon, “The Power of a Whisper, Hearing God and

Having The Guts to Respond” by Edward DeVries, Ph.D..  A multi-media and group

discussion.  Learning to hear God’s whispers among the many competing noises of

life.  This powerful, yet practical, small-group program uses video, related reading

material, and a study guide for personal application.  Book fee $10.

Watch for information in this newspaper each week as the Tuesday through

Friday classes are introduced throughout June and July.

Group to watch show

One Step Beyond, a group for people who are alone, will be going to the Cumberland County Playhouse on Thursday, June 28, at 2:30 P.M. to see “Music Man,”  then on to The Vegas for dinner at 6:00 P.M.

Please purchase your own tickets for The Playhouse so you will be able to sit where you’d like.  Reservations are necessary for dinner at the Vegas and must be called in to either Bobbye Bitto, 931-707-8607, or Carolyn Oshry, 931-788-1155, no later than Monday, June 25.

If you have to cancel, please call either Bobbye or Carolyn as this is a courtesy to the restaurant and other guests.  If you cannot make it to The Playhouse, you are still welcome to join us at The Vegas for dinner.

 

Volunteer Coin Club  to Meet July 10

The Volunteer Coin Club of Crossville will hold their regular meeting on Tuesday, July 10 at 6:30 P.M.  The meetings are held at the 127 Senior Center located at 1460 South Main Street (Highway 127 South).

Elks “All-You-Can-Eat” Friday Fish Fry June 22

The Elks Lodge is serving their famous Fish Fry on June 22 from 4 to 7 P.M.  For this all-inclusive price of $10 per person, you can enjoy “All-you-can-eat” fish and sides of coleslaw, French fries or baked potato and dessert.

For the non-fish lover, we offer a single serving of a half baked chicken which includes all side dishes, children 8 years and younger half price ($5).

JULY 4 CELEBRATION ON JULY 7 IN HEBBERTSBURG!

The 4th of July falls in mid-week this year, so, the holiday will be celebrated the following weekend.  Have you decided where to spend the evening of Saturday, July 7?  A great suggestion for local, inexpensive family fun is the Hebbertsburg Community Center Dinner/Dance from 6 P.M. to 9 P.M.

It is only 5 miles, about 10 minutes, from the 4-Way stop in Fairfield Glade, heading away from I-40; admission is just $3 a person for those over 16, and children are free.  The home-cooked Spaghetti Dinner complete with bread and a beverage is only $5 and you can purchase desserts and additional beverages for just $1.  All proceeds go to cover the band cost and the ongoing maintenance and upkeep of the Community Center.

Their musical entertainment will be Jack Melling and Sounds of the Country, a pleasurable and unique blend of Classic Country, blues and bluegrass; with Jack doing vocals and rhythm guitar, Terry King on steel guitar, Rob Baker with lead guitar and vocals, Duane Wager on bass and vocals, and Bryan Rigney playing the drums.

When the band takes a break, the clogging and line-dancing music comes on.  The whole idea is to have fun and everyone does; dancers and watchers alike.

During breaks we also have our Fun and Famous Cake-Walks.  For just $1 you can waltz around the circles and possibly win a delicious cake, provided by the Hebbertsburg ladies.

Sonoma Valley Bracelet Class Offered at PCAC

The Sonoma Valley Bracelet, a Linda Farber design, is a crystal flower bracelet of great charm and elegance that can be worn to the grocery store as easily as to a formal dinner party.

The Sonoma Valley Bracelet is an intermediate beading project but one that confident, beginning students can also tackle successfully.  Once the stitch is learned it can also be adapted for earrings and necklace.

Popular jewelry artist-instructor Linda Farber will offer this three-hour beading class on Tuesday, July 10, from 9:30 A.M. – 12:30 P.M.  The class fee is $20 for members or $25 for non-members.  All materials will be provided by the instructor and can be paid for at time of class at a cost of $15 to $20.

Registration must be made by July 1 so adequate materials can be ordered.  Any student registering after July 1 will be responsible for his/her own materials and can pick up a materials list at time of registration.

 Painting class offered

Fiber Artist, Jane Tavernier, is offering classes on “Painting With Fabric” at the Plateau Creative Arts Center, 451 Lakeview Drive (off Peavine), Fairfield Glade.  Students will craft finished products that are simple, inexpensive, and artistic.  These products can be added as an accent to a wall in your home or can be used as a holiday gift.

The class dates are June 21 from 10 A.M. -2 P.M.,  June 28 from 10 A.M. – 2 P.M., July 14 from 1 P.M – 4 P.M., and September 22 from 1 P.M. – 4 P.M.  The cost for each class is $15 for members of the Art Guild and $20 for non-members.  Bring scraps of material with you to the classes to be used for the transformation into an art picture.

Jehovah’s Witnesses Invite All to Attend “Safeguard Your Heart!” Convention

The 270 members of the three congregations of Jehovah’s Witnesses in the Crossville area will be attending their annual three-day convention July 27-29.

The theme of this year’s program is, “Safeguard Your Heart”.  Witnesses believe that the figurative heart, which is what a person is on the inside, needs protection if one is to have a good relationship with God and lasting happiness in life.

The convention will be held at the Hooper Eblen Center, Tennessee Tech University, 110 McGee Blvd. Cookeville, TN.  The public is invited to attend any session or the entire program.  These sessions are open to the public and are free.

Morning sessions will begin at 9:20 A.M. and conclude at 12:10 P.M. each day.  On Friday, the afternoon session will begin at 1:50  P.M. and end at 4:55 P.M.

On Saturday, the afternoon session will start at 1:35 P.M. and finish at 4:55  P.M. Sunday, the afternoon program will begin at 1:25  P.M. and conclude at 3:40  P.M.

 

Greeters Needed for Gun & Knife Show 

Are you interested in volunteering at a unique event?  Cumberland County will be hosting the second annual Gun & Knife Show on August 3 -5 P.M. at the Cumberland County Complex at 1398 Livingston Road, Crossville.

The event is being held to raise funds to promote programs for local kids in our area and to show off the Cumberland County Community Complex to residents and visitors.

Greeters will make sure all vendors and visitors feel welcome and appreciated.  They will be asked to promote Cumberland County as a whole in terms of restaurants, activities, and other businesses. Volunteer shifts are available on Friday, Saturday and Sunday to accommodate anyone’s schedule. Volunteer needs include:

• helping vendors unload and set up,

• handing out door prize tickets,

• directing visitors to different attractions at our event,

• offering assistance to vendors needing a break,

• coordinating the Featured Exhibition and Featured Educator locations,

• conducting exit surveys, and

• offering suggestions for other activities and locations in Cumberland County.

Whether you are or are not an gun or knife enthusiast or collector, there is something for all volunteers to enjoy. This is an opportunity for you to help the young people in our community and show your pride to visitors and tourists. Pro-Troop Rally 

Organizers of the annual July 4 Pro-Troop Rally have announced a program honoring our troops and veterans will be held 9 A.M. until 1 P.M. Wednesday, July 4 at the Cumberland County Courthouse.

The celebration will include several interesting and informative speakers as well as entertainers Jay Fox, D. J. Garrison and others. There will be a parade, a clown , fire truck, K-9 unit and other interesting areas. The Military Museum will also be open.

The program will include a flag folding ceremony and presentation and recognition of all military branches.

Food, soft drinks, and water will be available at no charge; all donated by local merchants.

Donations recieved will be for the County’s Veteran Service Office.

Limited seating will be available, but suggest you bring lawn chairs.

Concert scheduled

The Cumberland County Community Band and Chorus will hold its second Annual Veterans Benefit Concert.

The concert will be Thursday November 8, at 7 P.M., at Stone Memorial High School.  All donations received at the door will be benefit the Cumberland County Veterans Emergency Fund.

 

4 Paws Adoption Center

A Time 4 Paws Adoption Center is moving to 450 Old Jamestown Hwy next to Sonic July 1!  Volunteers are needed for the move.

Aluminum can collection site is still at The Breadbox on Peavine as well as the new center. Separate steel from aluminum cans please.

Also, AniMeals continues to need donations in the blue barrels at Food City in Fairfield Glade and in town, and 127 South Dollar General, Kroger, and Tractor Supply. Thanks for helping the animals. Contact Karen with any questions, 931-787-0610.

 

Bake Sale set for June 29

The Council of Catholic Women from St. Francis of Assisi Church are having their  annual bake sale at the Village Green Mall in Fairfield Glade from 9 A.M. to 2 P.M. on Friday, June 29.

The bake sale will feature homemade cakes, pies, breads, and pastries including sugar free and gluten free baked items.  Come early for the best choices.  For further information call 931-707-0283.

The public is encouraged to attend the reception and may view the exhibit Monday thru Friday, noon to 4 P.M. and Sunday 1 to 4 P.M.

The June exhibit will feature artwork of various styles and medium.  Some pieces may be purchased with all proceeds going to the artist.  Some prints will be available for sale.

Or an individual artist may be commissioned to create your choice picture in their style of painting.

The remaining displays feature the talents of local artists and groups.

The Cumberland Art Society is partially funded by the Tennessee Arts Commission, the City of Cookeville and the Cookeville Arts Council.

This year’s  Lake St. George Regatta to be  “VIVA LAS VEGAS!”  

Residents of Lake St. George have been busy planning this year’s regatta theme,  “Viva Las Vegas” for Saturday,  June 23 from 3 P.M.  to 7 P.M.

They will all meet at the marina at 3:00 and parade our floating casinos and show boats (pontoons) around the lake until 4 P.M.

Afterwards, please dock your boat at home and meet at the marina pavilion for games and door prizes, 50/50, and a delicious meal catered by Forte’s Restaurant.  The menu includes mostaccioli and meatballs, baked chicken, vegetable medley, fresh fruit, rolls, dessert and iced tea.

Dinner will begin around 5 P.M. and the $10 per person tickets must be purchased no later than June 16.

Dorchester Couples Golf League

They will play straight tee times in May starting at 3:33 P.M. to accommodate heavy league play and Timeshares, but starting on June 1, they will play a shotgun start at 4:30 P.M.

Various 9-hole scramble formats will be used.

No weekly commitment is required. Just sign up for the week(s) you want to play.

Golf Fundraiser set

The Art Guild at Fairfield Glade will hold its 2012 Golf Fundraiser on Friday, July 27 at Heatherhurst (Brae) Golf Course.

The event will begin with a 7:30 A.M. shotgun start.  The cost is $75 per person which includes golf, cart and luncheon to follow.

The format will be 2 net best balls. Teams: 4 man/women/mixed.
