Welcome to Medicare Class set for June 16

Are you turning 65 soon and confused about Medicare benefits and choices?

The State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP) is conducting a free “Welcome to Medicare” class at the Art Circle Library in Crossville on June 16, from 1 P.M. until 3:30 P.M..

The class will consist of training on Parts A, B, C & D, as well as Medigap policies and ways to prevent Medicare fraud.  SHIP is a federally funded program administered through the Area Agency on Aging & Disability.  Please call SHIP at 1-877-801-0044 to reserve a seat.

Master Gardener Panel Featured at Garden Club June Meeting

Seeking advice from experts on Plateau gardening, members of the FFG Garden Club will hear from a panel of Cumberland County Master Gardeners on June 15.

The regular monthly meeting convenes at 9:30 a.m. in the Fairfield Glade Community Church large meeting room. Members and guests are welcome to arrive at 9 A.M. for pre-meeting refreshments and camaraderie.

Master Gardener panelists will speak briefly on the advantages and challenges of developing and maintaining healthy home gardens in a climate and under soil conditions unfamiliar to Garden Club members, themselves “transplants” from regions across the U.S.  Members are invited to prepare questions of general interest for the participating panelists.

The panel discussion will follow the usual business meeting and announcements, with emphasis on the Club’s plans for summer and fall field trips.

Glade Treasure Hunt set

The 2016 Fairfield Glade Treasure Hunt is set for September 23. This has always been a fun time for those who enjoy puzzle solving, figuring out clues or just having a good time.

The treasure hunt is limited to 20 cars with a maximum of four people per vehicle. Participants will gather at the Discovery Center at 5 P.M. the day of the hunt.

They will be given a set of clues and an explanation of how the hunt is to be conducted.

All clues will lead to a certain destination in Fairfield Glade, with a total of 10 puzzles to be solved. The final clue will lead participants to a secret destination where food and beverages (BYOB) will be served and prizes awarded.

Participants should bring a FFG site map, pencils, tablet, flashlight, and cell phone.

The cost is $10 per person. Call your friends and neighbors and make plans for a fun evening.

KWVA to install officers at June 8 meeting

The Plateau Chapter #297, Korean War Veterans Association, at the monthly meeting, June 8, will install new officers for the ensuing year.

The meeting is to begin at 1 P.M. at the Fairfield Glade Community & Conference Center on Stonehenge Drive, where the new Commander, Senior Vice Commander, & Junior Vice Commander will be installed.  Guests are welcome and additional information or questions may be addressed to Cmdr Gene Stone at 931-484-4610.

Results of the spring fund raiser, sale of the South Korean Rose of Sharon Flower will be available and reported.

The Chapter has been invited to lunch at the Red Stone Arsenal in Alabama on Friday, June 24—arrangements and sign up for this event will commence.  It is an event that members should want to attend.  There is also an event in Knoxville on Saturday, June 25, at Buddy’s BBQ on Kingston Pike for Korean Vets.

Reservations for this event may be accomplished by calling Rex Davis at 865-681-3900 before June 20.  Wives or a family member are invited to accompany Vets to each of these events.

The balance of the meeting will be available for expression of events going forward for the balance of this fiscal year.  Uniforms are required and it is hoped that attendance will be full!

Plateau Photography Club Meeting slated

The topic for the next meeting of the Plateau Photography Club will be “Cumberland County-Rooftops and Rooflines.”

Members will explore the county looking for interesting angles, textures, lines, and silhouettes to share with the group.  The meeting will be at the Fairfield Glade Library, Room C at 1 P.M. on Thursday, June 16th.

The meeting is open to members of the Plateau PC Users Group and guests for a $3 fee.

2nd Annual Origami Tsunami Festival set

The 2nd Annual Origami Tsunami Festival will be held on Friday/Saturday, June 10-11, at the Art Circle Public Library (ACPL) in Crossville, TN from 9 A.M. to 6 P.M. on Friday and 9 A.M. to 2:30 P.M. on Saturday.

The event is being organized by P.O.P. (Plateau Origami People), a local paper folding group.

There will be folding classes, video presentations, folding contests with prizes and lots of Folding and Fun.

Additionally, several “expert” folders will be present showing their work.

This is an event for ALL ages, young and not-so-young.  No experience necessary … and free origami giveaways to attendees.   The two-day event is free and open to the public.  A schedule of detailed events is available at the ACPL.

Dance Club inviting all

The New Generation Dance Club is a dinner dance club that features a social hour starting at 5:30 P.M. with dinner served at 6:30 P.M. and dancing continuing until 9 P.M.

The club was started in 1990 to provide an evening of sociability, dancing, fellowship and expanded friendship.  The dances are held at the Fairfield Glade Community Conference Center four times per year in May, July, October and December, on the second Tuesday of these months.  Dress is usually smart casual or dressy.

Invitations with menu selections are mailed to the membership six weeks prior to each dance.  If you wish to sit with friends you can make table reservations.  If you wish to make new friends you will be seated accordingly.  Invitation responses are returned to the club Vice President along with your seating and meal preference and a check to cover the cost of the dance and three course meal selection.

The annual membership dues are $35 per couple for existing members and $40 per couple for new members. Guests may attend a dance before considering membership to the dance club.

If you are new to this area, this is a great way to meet people.  Or, if you are a longtime resident and looking for a nice evening out, plan to attend the next New Generation Dance Club event on Tuesday, July 12, 2016.

Marathon Pinochle set

Marathon PinochlePicnic is scheduled for Saturday, June 11 – sign up by June 3.

The Marathon Pinochle Club of Fairfield Glade will meet for its annual end-of-season picnic at Fairfield Glade Community Church (521 Snead Dr.), including an optional final tournament. A picnic lunch, catered by Glader Judy Kenyon and friends will feature meatball sandwiches, two salads, dessert, and soft drinks or tea.

The cost is $9 per person, which includes lunch and a donation for the use of the dining room. The picnic begins at 2 P.M. with the tournament, ($1 per player, and prizes for top scorers).

Participation is voluntary, and is open to members, former members, spouses, friends, and potential new members.

Food will be served at 3 P.M., with a brief meeting, distribution of 2015-2016 season winnings, and completion of the tournament to follow.

Hospice meeting set

The June monthly meeting of the Fairfield Glade Hospice Auxiliary will be held, Monday, June 6, at 2:30 P.M. at St. Francis of Assissi Catholic Church Hall. We will be discussing our Butterfly Release Fundraiser that is scheduled for Saturday, June 11.

All current and prospective members are encouraged to attend.  Guests are especially welcome for the opportunity to learn more about the fund raising mission and work of the Hospice Auxiliary. All funds raised by these events support the ongoing operation of Cumberland House, a six bed, end of life facility, which accommodates all persons, without consideration of ability to pay.

Kayak Connection rolls on through summer

The kayak group started paddleing this month. Saturday, May 7 was just fantastic.The lakes are warming, fish are jumping, ducks are flying, eagles are diving.

They launch off from FFG lake docks on Saturdays at 8:30 A.M., sharp. Here is the lake schedule for the next few weeks:

Next Celtic Circle Gathering set June 7

The Celtic Circle has had a busy month so far and it isn’t over yet. There is still time to attend the Smoky Mountain Highland Games at Maryland College on Saturday and Sunday, May 21 and 22.

And, don’t miss the Medieval Faire being held in Harriman on Saturday and Sunday, May 21 and 22, and on Saturday, Sunday and Monday, May 28, 29, and 30; hours are 10 A.M. to 5 P.M.

What is being planned for June?  Well, if you like taking short jaunts, say to Glasgow, Kentucky, mark your calendar now for Friday through Sunday, June 3 to 5, and attend the Highland Games and Celtic Festival at River Barren State Park.

Their June gathering will be an informal outdoor concert at Julianne’s house on Tuesday, June 7 starting at 6 P.M. and all Celtic Cousins are invited.

Ice Cream and More!

On Saturday, June 18th there will be an Ice Cream Social at the Fairfield Glade United Methodist Pavilion.

Please come and join in on the fun.  Everyone is welcome to come from noon to 2:30 P.M. for a hot dog and beverage as well as some ice cream with the trimmings.

Bring your family and neighbors and enjoy the music of our Praise Band “Rev3lation” under the direction of Marty Gibson.

Butterfly release slated by Glade Hospice

The Fairfield Glade Hospice Auxiliary will present its 5th Annual Hospice Benefit Celebration of Life Butterfly Release on Saturday, June 11, on the Courthouse Lawn in Crossville from 9: to 10 A.M.

The program will be an uplifting and joyful experience remembering those we have loved and lost.

The donation for the butterflies is $20 for one name to be remembered or $100 for six different names to be remembered.

They encourage you to attend our event, bring a lawn chair and wear brightly colored clothing.  Those unable to attend may still reserve butterflies in the name of a family member or friend and these will also be released.  Butterfly order forms are available at the Hospice Office at 30 E. Adams St., at area churches and businesses, or one can  be e-mailed to your from Kay Moyer at [email protected].

The deadline for ordering butterflies is May 28, 2016.

Glade Church to host Creation Classes 

Do you have questions about Creation, such as: How long were Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden?  Where is the Garden of Eden now?  Who was Cain’s wife?  Did Abraham and Job know each other?  I could go on and on,  Will these questions be answered in the Scientific and Biblical Creationism Course?  We invite you to attend and find out.

Fellowship Baptist Church, 12 Westminster Court, Fairfield Glade, campus site for the ongoing Faith Bible Institute (college level) Bible program, is excited to offer this in-depth, three week Scientific and Biblical Creationism Elective Course.  It will run from Monday June 13, through the end of the month with two weekly attendance options: Monday mornings from 9 A.M. to noon or Thursday evenings from 5 to 8 P.M.

The course is offered to all area adults.

The cost is $40 per person and covers all needed materials (bring your own pencils) and for couples, the spouse’s cost is just $30.

You can pay the entire amount when submitting the application, or just the $15 application fee at that time, with the balance due at the first class. The completed application and money must be received at Fellowship Baptist, by noon on Sunday, May 15. Make checks payable to Fellowship Baptist Church.

Kinseekers to Discuss DNA at June 2 Meeting

The next Kinseekers of Fairfield Glade meeting will be on Thursday, June 2 from 1 to 3 P.M. in the Fellowship Hall at the Fairfield Glade Community Church, 521 Snead Drive.  Park in the back and use the back/side entrance.

The speaker will be Edy Williams, a teacher in Overton County and a local expert on DNA; the cost, the procedure, what to expect and how to follow-up on the results. Even if you aren’t into genealogy, this is a fascinating and useful topic to explore. Everyone is welcome.

At our May 5 meeting, Darla Brock, an Archivist with 16 year’s experience with the Tennessee State Library and Archives, spoke on using the Tennessee Supreme Court Records in our genealogy research. She detailed the recent improvements to the State Archives building location, as well as which types of records and data are available for public viewing.

Also, during the meeting, our Program Planning Team passed out survey sheets for program ideas for next year and requested we fill them out and return them at the June meeting. Gene and Holly work hard to bring us interesting and relevant subjects each and every month, year after year; so please, complete your survey and bring it on June 2. Thanks.

Kinseekers meets the first Thursday each month, the membership dues are just $10 a year, there are no attendance requirements and you don’t have to be actively doing genealogy research to join. In fact, we suggest you attend the first time as our guest.

Volunteer Coin Club to Meet June 14

The Volunteer Coin Club of Crossville will hold their regular  meeting on  Tuesday, June 14 at 6:30 pm.  The meetings are held at the 127 Senior Center located at 1460 South Main Street (Highway 127 South).  Meetings are held on the second Tuesday of each month.  Visitors and guests are welcome.  Contact Mike Puhl (456-0397) or Franc Conner (337-1247) for information.

The Cumberland County Republican Party’s Annual Reagan Day Dinner will be held Saturday, June 4 at 6:00 at the Cumberland County Community Complex. A ribeye steak dinner will be served with delicious sides and desserts. The keynote speaker this year will be Congressman Diane Black. Tickets are only $30 per person or a table of 8 can be purchased for $200. Tickets may be purchased by calling 931-456-4414, or at the door. All proceeds benefit our local Republican Party.

CWC Hosting “A Teddy Bear Picnic”

Hey Ladies, do you like teddy bears?  Do you have a favorite one from way-back-when?  Maybe you have a collection of them piled on your bed or on display on shelves around your house…maybe you still sleep with one?  There is just something so comforting and cuddly about them, isn’t there?

CWC is hosting “A Teddy Bear Picnic” on Thursday, June 16, at The Discovery Center, 5160 Peavine Road, Fairfield Glade, 38558, which is diagonally across the street from the stop light at Food City.

We invite all area ladies to attend. You’re welcome to bring your favorite Teddy or a picture of your Teddy Bear collection.  In fact, if you have a Really Old Teddy Bear, bring it with you.  We will give a very nice gift in recognition of the Oldest Teddy there.

The other part of our plan is a Picnic…an Indoor Picnic, which means no ants, flies, mosquitos or sand; instead, we’ll have air conditioning, comfortable chairs, tables to eat at and, best of all, we’re encouraged to wear casual, comfortable clothes.

Doors open and our ‘Social Hour’ runs from 11:00 to 11:30 (CST).  The luncheon and program are from 11:30 to 1:00. Our June feature will be The Cumberland County Playhouse Performers and you know how great they are.

Our Inspirational Speaker will be Arlene Grimes from South Carolina.  She just recently retired from Clemson University, and will share her thoughts on “When All Else Fails, Read The Directions!”  Can anyone relate?

Stonecroft Women’s Connection (CWC) is a non-denominational organization where women of all ages and walks of life can meet for fellowship and encouragement.  Church affiliation is not required.  Our luncheons are held on the third Thursday of every other month; so for the rest of the year, they’ll be in August, October and December.  But, don’t wait, we hope you will join us on June 16, and bring a friend or neighbor with you.

Fellowship Baptist Presents “Strings of Praise Concert”

All area gospel music lovers are invited to join us on Saturday, June 4 at 6:00 (CST) as Fellowship Baptist Church, 12 Westminster Court, Fairfield Glade, presents our second annual Strings of Praise Concert. This free concert is being held in our church sanctuary.

Well known local musicians Bob Bourne, Mike Garret and Dick Walter will be joined by Butch Butler (professional steel guitarist) and Joe Wihitten (piano), both from Alabama.

We will be blessed with music from the following stringed insturments: a steel guitar, an acoustic guitar, a violin, an autoharp,  a bass guitar, a mandolin, a psaltry and a piano.
