Group therapy offered

This summer, the Christian Counseling Center of Cumberland County will offer group therapy sessions for those who have struggled with addictions.

These sessions are design to compliment an initial treatment program for addiction and will provide support for those on the road to sobriety.  A therapy session provides more than support groups normally offer.

Each session is led by a professionally trained counselor and will help those attending explore their thoughts, emotions and behaviors during their recovery.

Skills and attitudes that help prevent relapse and promote a positive attitude will be taught and practiced.

Group therapy sessions recommend a six week commitment period.  Separate men’s and women’s sessions will be held.  Group size is limited, so sign up soon to reserve your spot.

Cost is $15 per session.  To sign up, contact the Christian Counseling center at 931-707-8200.  Sessions will begin as early as June 19th.

Memory Loss Care Group Meeting June11

The next Memory Loss Care Group meeting will be Thursday, June 11th at 11 A.M. at Fairfield Glade First Baptist Church, located behind Food City.

The meeting is held in the Music Center, Room 139; please enter on the porch side of the church.   The topic this month will be better communication.

The speaker will be Ed Devries who received his PhD in Rehabilitation Counseling and has many years’ experience in various fields, including Special Education teacher, Psychologist and Executive Career Coach.

As a Rehabilitation Psychologist, Ed worked with long term issues such as strokes, head injury and spinal cord injury and the usual family adjustments as a result of the trauma.

Just as trying to communicate with someone having hearing loss requires special attention and patience, the same is true with Memory Loss.   It takes longer for a person with dementia to process the information, which can be a challenge.

Under the umbrella of dementia, there are 70 different aspects or diseases affecting the brain.  Brain disease is no respecter of persons so it is important to learn all we can to help those who come across our path.

Whether you are a caregiver, volunteer in the community or have a friend or loved one with dementia, they invite you to join them and benefit from the helpful information presented at each meeting.

Contact Margaret Brant 931-337-9630 for additional information or questions.

Caregivers need care too

According to the latest statistics on caregiving from the National Family Caregivers Association, nearly half of the U.S. population has a chronic condition.  From that number 41 million are limited in their daily activities while 12 million are unable to live independently or even leave the house.  One can deduce from these numbers that there are millions of family caregivers out there.

There is such a group in Fairfield Glade.  Join the community Caregiver’s Support Group that is held monthly on the first Thursday of every month from 12:30-1:30 P.M. at the Fairfield Glade United Methodist Church, 231 Westchester Drive.

If your loved one has memory issues bring them along for some games and quality time with our caregiver on staff.  They will be entertained while you have time to share with others who have similar circumstances as your own.
