Backyard Birders meet

Anyone interested in learning about local birds is welcome to attend the Fairfield Glade Backyard Birders Meeting on Tuesday, April 4th at the Library/Multipurpose Building on Lakeside Drive near Legends starting at 3 P.M.

The topic “Improving Backyard Birding Skills” will be presented by Don and Linda Eppelheimer. You will learn how to find, see and name many different songbirds in this area.

Many of these birds are migrating through and others are year round residents. If you have them, bring binoculars as well as Smart phone, IPAD or tablet.

Learn how to use the free app, Merlin from Cornell Labs, to identify birds by sight and/or sound with your device. There is no charge for this meeting but there will be a 50/50 raffle available to help defray costs.

Korean vets host event

Having troubles growing things in Cumberland County???

Save the date—Wednesday, April 12!  Plateau Chapter #297, Korean War Veterans Association will be hosting County Agriculture Agent, Gregg Upchurch, to answer any questions that day concerning growing in our county.

Everybody is invited to this timely get together as we kick off the spring/summer growing season.  The meeting begins at 1 P.M., at the Fairfield Glade Community & Conference Center on Stonehenge Drive.

Fashion Show slated

The April 20th CWC Luncheon at the Discovery Center will feature a Spring Fashion Show with ladies modeling clothing from Elite Repeats.

The speaker will be Harolyn Benjamin from Enterprise, Alabama.  She is a motivational speaker and talk show host.

Wild Game Dinner for members and public

Fairfield Glade Sportsman Club members and the public are invited to a wild game dinner on March 25. This will be the 29th year that they have had this special event.

Members donate wild game for this event, but for the more timid eaters Ham will be available.

You can go to the Sportsman Club at 650 Shorty Barnes Road on Thursdays, Saturday and Sundays when the club is open from 11 A.M. to 5 P.M., to pick up your tickets at $18 per plate.

The dinner includes,  ice tea, coffee, and desserts. The game dinner will be  held at Scarlett Catering, 5429 Peavine Road, Fairfield Glade.

Happy hour is 5 P.M. with dinner at 6 P.M. This has always been a wonderful social event, we hope you make time to join us.

Fairfield Glade Sportsman Club has a new board that are actively working to make it one of the best ranges in the state.

They are a non-profit Trap, Skeet, Pistol, Rifle, member only club with yearly dues of only $82.31.

With over 600 members, their website can be found at  ffgsc.com. It will offer our current members or new members, a choice of renewing or signing up for the first time, on line.

CPR class offered

There will be a BLS (Healthcare Provider) CPR class on Saturday, April 15th, at 9 A.M. at Small Biz Staffing (behind Long John Silvers & across from Regions Bank in downtown Crossville).

The cost will be $35 per person & must be paid when signing up for the class.

There will also be a First Aid Class on the same day, same location beginning at 1:30 P.M.  The cost for this class will be $25 per person & must be paid when signing up for the class.

Free Tax Prep offered

Liberty Tax Service is accepting donations to support the important work being done by A Time 4 Paws. During the month of March, Liberty Tax Service will offer free tax preparation to new customers who donate Diamond Dog Food, Purina Cat Food, treats, litter, toys, or even cleaning supplies or copy paper to A Time 4 Paws when they have their taxes done at the Liberty Tax Service office located at 800 N. Main Street, Crossville, TN.

“A Time 4 Paws is doing great things to help our community,” said Cliff Davidson, owner of Liberty Tax Service in Crossville. “We are offering free tax preparation as a way to raise awareness and to help A Time 4 Paws continue its work.”

A Time 4 Paws is a no-kill nonprofit animal welfare organization based in Crossville, Tennessee. Their mission is to provide and promote the education and programs necessary to eliminate the killing of homeless dogs and cats and to prevent cruelty to animals.

Liberty Tax Service will provide free tax preparation through March 31 for new customers who bring donations for A Time 4 Paws when they come to Liberty Tax Service near Dairy Queen for professional tax preparation with an accuracy guarantee.

Liberty Tax does take appointments, however, they are not necessary.

True Sign Of Spring!

We’ve had a mild winter and the buds are starting to pop out already, but the ‘True-Sign-That-Spring-is-Here’ is that The Hebbertsburg Community Center Dinner/Dances are starting again on Saturday, April 1st.  Now don’t be a Fool and miss it!

You’ve heard the old adage  “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it!”   Well, the Hebberstburg Community Center Dinner/Dance plan and program from last year worked out great, so they “ain’t fixin’ it!”

The City Lites Band will be providing the music for us, the suggested adult donation at the door is still $4, with kids 16 and under free and the meals are still just $7 each.

The meal choices again this year are homemade spaghetti and meat sauce with bread, or a BBQ sandwich and chips with your choice of coffee, tea, water or a soft drink, plus additional drinks or a desserts are only a $1 each.

We’ll also have our Fun ‘N Famous $1-a-chance Cakewalk with cakes provided by our Hebbertsburg ladies, and our own Sweet T Dancers will provide entertainment during the band’s breaks.

The doors open at 4:30 P.M., the meals are served starting at 5 and the music and dancing runs from 5:30 to 8:30.

Take Peavine Road about 5 miles North from the 4 -Way Stop in Fairfield Glade (opposite direction from I-40) to the Y in the road. Watch for the signs. Turn on the left branch of the Y and go about a block.  The Community Center is on the left. Questions?  Call Carolyn at 931-707-7837.

Neighbors & Newcomers meeting on March 23

Neighbors and Newcomers of Cumberland County is the “Best Little Club on the Mountain!” and you are invited to our next meeting, March 23, at R Place, 103 Country Club Drive in Lake Tansi.

The meeting places change monthly to accommodate our faithful members.  This month the program will feature Nita Boring, Director of the Military Museum in Crossville.

Menu for this meeting is Choice of corned beef or grilled chicken, veggie, potatoes, salad, rolls, dessert, tea, coffee or water.

Donations will be items for Military Members to include:  toothpaste, toothbrush, floss, cotton swab, shaving lotion, disposable razors, shampoo, packaged tissue, sunscreen, soap bars, Chap stick, eye drops, foot powder, deodorant, wet wipes (no sanitizer bottles), moisturizer, Band-Aids, bug repellant, tee shirts, boxer shorts, socks-men and women, etc.  As always there will be a basket passed for monetary donations.

Lunch is $14.oo and reservations must be made by March 18th.  Also if you made a reservation and are unable to attend you must also cancel by the 18th or you are responsible for payment of your meal.

Bible Study Tech – Spring Class Begins

Register now for the upcoming spring Bible Study Tech class, “The Armor of God” with teacher, Priscilla Shirer.

Priscilla is a graduate of Dallas Theological Seminary and is an internationally-recognized Bible teacher who focuses her ministry on the expository teaching of the Word of God to women.  She desires to see women both understand the uncompromising truths of Scripture intellectually and experience them practically.

The study begins on Monday, March 27th from 1:30 to 4 P.M., and continues through Monday, May 22. Bible Study Tech classes are held in the Fellowship Hall of Fairfield Glade United Methodist Church at 231 Westchester Drive.

If you are interested in learning more about the Bible and interacting with a lot of very fun and interesting ladies, please join us.

Workshops scheduled

The Cumberland County United Fund will host a Non-Profit Workshop Series, presented by SCORE, with the dates and topics listed as follows:

April 19th – Board Development; May 17th – Financial Management; August 10th – Marketing; November 9th – Strategic Planning.

Volunteer Needed

Cookeville, Tenn. – The Putnam County Remote Area Medical Clinic is seeking up to thirty additional dental professionals and up to 15 additional optometry professionals to volunteer at the RAM Clinic on March 18 and 19. Those interested in volunteering should visit www.ramusa.org/volunteer to sign up.

RAM will host a mobile medical clinic on Saturday March 18 and Sunday March 19 at Cookeville High School in Cookeville TN. Details for the free clinic will follow in a separate press release.

Fun, socializing, dancing

Whether you are new to the area or have just never thought of joining a dance club, New Generation Dance Club may be the fun opportunity for you.

They offer four dinner dances a year for those who enjoy foxtrots, line dancing, swing, waltz, cha-cha, rumba and rock and roll dancing.  These dances are spread out throughout the year and take place at the Fairfield Glade Community and Conference Center, on a wonderful dance floor.  Any level of dancing is fine!  They welcome new members and guests.

Each dinner dance includes a cash bar, three-course dinner and live music from professional bands.  Events begin with a social hour at 5:30 P.M.  Dinner and dancing start at 6:30 P.M. and continue until 9 P.M.

UCHRA program invite

UCHRA would like to invite anyone 55 years or older who meets the eligibility guidelines to be a part of our Senior Community Service Employment Program (SCSEP).

This program provides on-the-job training for older individuals seeking gainful employment in the Upper Cumberland region.  This training is twenty hours per week at the current minimum wage with government and non-profit agencies.

Marathon Pinochle to continue through May

Want to meet new people, old friends , and enjoy playing Pinochle? Now is the time to enroll for our 2016-2017 season. Play began last September, and ends in May.

There is a game for each month, and schedules can be arranged to play any mutually convenient date.

Each team plays 9 games, which are alternately at your or your opponent’s homes. Cost per season is $11 per person, $22 per team which covers prizes and club expenses.

Prizes are awarded at a catered luncheon in June. This year’s event will be held at Fairfield Glade Community Church on June 10, 2017.
