Quilt Guild to meet
The regular Membership Meeting of the Fairfield Glade Fantastic Quilt Guild will be held on Friday, November 17 beginning at 9 A.M. in the Fellowship Hall of the FFG United Methodist Church (231 Westchester Dr., Fairfield Glade).
There will be a brief Business Meeting followed by the election of Board Members for 2018. The Program this month will feature Guild Member Debbie Roberts who is a local long-arm quilter.
Debbie will offer some tips and hints as to how one should prepare a quilt for quilting. She will discuss how both the quilt top and the backing should be prepared for the long-armer. She will also discuss ways to prevent a “wavy” border as well as give some guidelines for determining backing and batting sizes to be used for various quilts. This should prove to be a very informative presentation, especially for the non-seasoned quilter.
The Fantastic Quilt Guild is a local group of 100+ quilters who meet on the third Friday of the month at the Fairfield Glade United Methodist Church to further the art of quilting through education, sharing, community outreach, and social camaraderie. They have been meeting since 2002. New members and visitors are always welcome.

Chat ‘N Chew with Kinseekers Dec. 7
Join us for a Chat ‘N Chew with the Kinseekers on Thursday, December 7 from 1 to 3 P.M. (CT), in The Fellowship Hall at the Fairfield Glade Community Church, 521 Snead Drive, FFG.
What’s a Chat ‘N Chew? It’s a relaxed, informal meeting, where we sit at long tables that are set up in a large square so all can participate.
And as we ‘Chat’, we also enjoy the snacks and finger food that everyone has brought to share…that’s the ‘Chew’ part.
Being in December, it’s the perfect opportunity for bringing your favorite Christmas cookie and fudge or candy treats … and, healthy food is permitted too! In other words, plan to go off your diet for the day! Of course, it is also the designated time to bring any ‘brick-wall’ genealogy problems you’re dealing with, as well as your recent ‘success stories’ to share.
At their November meeting, Holly Clark kept them enthralled and entertained with her program on the Melungeons. She started out announcing, “Who are the Melungeons? There’s no clear answer to that question.” She then showed several online videos dealing with the Melungeons.
Apparently, there have been Melungeon clans or tribes found in secluded areas from the Adirondack to the Appalachian to the Smoky Mountains, going as far back as the 1600’s, even before the Pilgrims arrived. Of course there are only word-of-mouth stories and legends passed down through the generations and they vary some from one locale to the next, but are basically all the same.
The Melungeons were rumored to be fierce warrior, greatly feared by any nearby settlements. They are blended descendants of either Portuguese, Spanish or English sailors or ship’s captains, or fur traders, and the local Indian tribes. And in some areas, negro slaves are included in the mix.
The videos showed pictures of families with some members having obviously Indian or negro features while siblings have very Spanish or English physical characteristics. Some of the videos are down-right funny. Holly ended the discussion by saying, “Now that you’ve seen the information, you can understand … there is no clear proof of Who are the Melungeons?!”
As you can tell, they have a good time at our meetings, and you are welcome to join them. You do not have to be ‘into genealogy,’ just plain curiosity is fine. Please come to a meeting as their guest; if you like it, yearly membership is only $10. Use the sanctuary side parking lot and entrance. Any questions, contact [email protected].
