Cumberland Mountain Civil War Round Table

Jerry T. Wooten, Park Manager of Bicentennial Capitol Mall State Park, Nashville, will speak at the Cumberland Mountain Civil War Round Table meeting on Wednesday, November 13, 6 P.M., at Christ Lutheran Church, 481 Snead Drive, Fairfield Glade.

His program will illustrate the significance of Johnsonville and its impact upon the Union war effort in Tennessee in 1863-65.  It is the subject of his newly released book (October, 2019): Johnsonville: Union Supply Operations on the Tennessee River and the Battle of Johnsonville, November 4-5, 1864.  Wooten says, “It’s a fantastic story!”.

It is the importance of the town and its supply hub that drew the attention of Confederate cavalryman General Nathan Bedford Forrest in November, 1864.  Confederate forces hoped destruction of Union supply lines would draw Union General William T. Sherman, then embarking on his March to the Sea, back to Tennessee and into battle.

Forrest’s land-water operations nearly wiped out the Johnsonville supply depot, severely disrupted Union General George Thomas’s army in Nashville, and impeded his operations against General  John Bell Hood’s Confederate army.  However, it did not stop Sherman’s movement through Georgia, as his troops were cut off of supplies coming from Tennessee.

Prof. Wooten will bring copies of his books for purchase.  Meetings are open to everyone.  Visitors are always welcome.  There is no charge for members and first-time visitors.  Those visiting a second time or more are asked to pay $5.  Light refreshments and abundant conversation follow each meeting.

For more information about the round table, contact Ken Patton, 901-292-9312, or Susan Hadenchuk, 910-619-0023.

Crossville Oktoberfest returns October 18-19

It’s time to pull out your lederhosen, dust off that dirndl and get ready for some good old-fashioned German-style family entertainment at Crossville Oktoberfest!

Hosted by Knights of Columbus Council 8152, Crossville Oktoberfest is slated for Friday and Saturday, October 18 and 19, at the K of C grounds, 2892 Highway 70 East in Crossville.

This annual event has earned its well-deserved reputation as the Upper Cumberlands’ premier German-American festival.

A favored attraction among autumn visitors to the area, many folks also enjoy some cool-weather golf, hiking or other outdoor activities. Last year’s event drew nearly two thousand revelers from all over Tennessee, plus folks from as far away as Indiana and Michigan.

Event co-chair John Peaslee says this will be the organization’s 29th annual festival. “It’s going to be a great time. But then again, it always is,” he said. “The food, the music and dancing – all great. And the people who come out to enjoy Crossville Oktoberfest every year make it a terrific event.

“And the beer,” he added. “Let’s not forget the beer.”

Fellow co-chair Denny Roy agreed that’s one of the highlights of Crossville Oktoberfest. He noted there’ll be no shortage of domestic and imported brews to choose from.

“We’ll have a wide selection of beers,” Mr. Roy asserted. “We switch it up from year to year. Keep a few favorites, and offer some new things, just to keep things interesting.”

A variety of soft drinks will also be available for sale.

The festivities begin at 11:30 Friday morning with the ceremonial tapping of the keg, and the designation of the festival’s Lord and Lady Mayor, whose identities are kept a strict secret until the start of the ceremony. Many attendees plan their arrival in conjunction with the opening ceremonies.

And even if it happens to be bad weather, that won’t be able to put a damper on the festive atmosphere.

Crossville Oktoberfest is a rain-or-shine festival, with all activities taking place beneath enormous tents set up on the grounds.

Grief support offered

We are offering a Grief Support Program that covers all types of grief—depression, anxiety, death, broken relationships, lack of self-esteem and the list goes on.

We meet 1 to 3 P.M. the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of each month in Room 156 of the church.

The church is located 130 Towne Centre Way, behind Food City.

Please enter through the kitchen-last door on the portico side of the church.

The meeting on the 2nd Tuesday is more structured with devotion and focusing on, “Walk with God”, the devotional book that we all are using.

The meeting on the 4th Tuesday is all discussion—we call it “Open Mic”.

The purpose is to get our lives back on track after experiencing the grief so that we can lead joyful, happy, God-centered lives again. We are simply there to share and help carry one another’s burdens.

This is a totally confidential meeting. For questions please contact Nancy Skaggs at 931-260-6600.

Wild About Cats group looks for volunteers

Wild About Cats is looking for compassionate volunteers to assist in feeding local cat colonies, fostering adoptable rescued cats, and fund-raising activities.

Interested volunteers are urged to contact the group at WildAboutCatsTN@gmail.

The group feeds some 25 cats daily in 8 different areas (colonies) in and around Crossville, including Fairfield Glade.

Reliable volunteer feeders are especially critical during these harsh winter months when cats need shelter and daily food to survive.

Foster homes are needed as well. Many of these cats could be vet checked, neutered and put up for adoption, but currently there are no foster parents to care for them during this process.Helping these cats is rewarding work for any animal lover.

The care and affection you give the cats until a forever home is priceless.

Glade Bicycling news

The Fairfield Glade Cycling Group conducts scheduled “on-paved road” group rides on a weekly basis.

Helping Cumberland County’s Needy Cats

This spring is rough! Wild About Cats, a local rescue organization, is facing two problems: not only are more kittens born to homeless cats at this time of the year, but the small organization has lost several critical volunteers due to out-of-town moves.

That’s why Wild About Cats is seeking volunteers to help feed or foster these cats that could make wonderful, beloved pets.

The group feeds some 20 cats daily in 8 different areas (colonies) in and around Crossville and Fairfield Glade.
