Kinseekers to Discuss Genealogy Research at November 3 Meeting

Are your genealogy notes and pictures filed and stored haphazardly in boxes and drawers?  Do you have trouble finding materials you know are ‘somewhere’ in your computer files?

Whether you’re a serious researcher, or just keeping a casual record of your family background, I’m sure you can relate to these questions.

At our Kinseekers meeting on Thursday, November 3 in the Fellowship Hall at The Fairfield Glade Community Church, 521 Snead Drive, Donna Fitzgerald will give a detailed presentation on ‘Using EVERNOTE for Your Genealogy Research,’ with handouts for easy referencing.

Kinseekers meets the first Thursday each month from 1 to 3 P.M. You don’t have to be a serious genealogist to attend, and dues are only $10 a year, but, we invite you to come the first time as our guest.

Donna will show us how user friendly the program is and how many ways it will simplify, and correlate all areas of your genealogy research.  It’s not just for genealogy either, Donna will show how useful it is for personal and household information.  You will be amazed. A question and answer time , so, bring paper and a pen or pencil for jotting down questions.

At the October meeting, Mark Pfaffenroth shared information on the ‘Find-A-Grave’ computer program, which is especially helpful in locating old, hard-to-find gravesites and tombstones.

Why go to the trouble of researching old tombstones and cemetery records?  Because, they often contain ‘tons’ of valuable miscellaneous information not found elsewhere.

Before the 1800’s few cemeteries had permanent markers, and even up till the 1900’s grave sites were often reused. Un-embalmed bodies were buried in unlined wooden caskets which, over time, rotted and sank, so, another casket could be buried on top of it, etc.

Most municipal cemeteries were located at least 1-mile past the city or village limits for health reasons, while others were within a fenced area behind the local churches. In either case records were kept of who was buried there, even if finding the exact burial spot is questionable. In these situations, the Find-A-Grave site is priceless. Thank you, Mark for an excellent presentation.

Other area genealogy related groups are: The Celtic Circle which meets the first Tuesday each month from 6 to 8:00 at the Christian Church of the Cumberlands, 1312 East First Street, The Cumberland County Archives and Family Heritage Center at 95 East First Street which is open Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays from 9 to 4;00 and The Cumberland County Genealogy Society, which meets the first and third Mondays monthly at 6:00 in the Art Circle Public Library, 3 East Street (all in Crossville.)

These volunteers, trained and certified with the cooperation of the Internal Revenue Service, work at locations in Tansi, Sparta, Pleasant Hill, Jamestown, Fairfield Glade and Crossville.   New volunteers are always needed.

If you would like to be involved, but aren’t sure if you want to prepare returns, consider working at one of the sites greeting clients, checking identification and/or organizing the paperwork.
