Glade Environmental Committee has review
For The Vista
The Fairfield Glade Environmental Committee has just completed its second year of operation. And a productive year it was.
The first order of business was to create a policy that would allow the community to respond if an invasive and problematic species colonizes in our community.
The proposed policy was approved by the board of directors and has been in use for several months. The committee has responded several times to residents concerns about suspicious plants.
So far none of the investigations have found a problem species.
The committee has interacted with the Obed Watershed Community Assoc. on projects proposed for the area of the Wildwood Stables. As a result of this relationship it is possible that stream bed restoration work will be done on Glade Creek in the area below the community gardens. The work will be funded by a grant which the Obed Watershed Community Assoc. has been awarded.
The committee is also working with the gardens committee and the Wildwood Stables management to reduce erosion in that area through improved soil management. The relationship with the Obed Watershed Community Assoc. may also result in other ecological restorations in our community.
Hemlock Woolly Adelgid (HWA) is an on going concern that threatens the hemlock tree population in our community. We have investigated past actions and have requested funding to continue to try and protect the mature hemlock trees in the community.
In an effort to increase community awareness of environmental issues, the committee has begun publishing a series of articles written by committee members. This is the third article in the series and you should be on the lookout for several more.
Also in the effort to provide information to the community, the committee manned a booth at the 2016 Hit The Trails Festival. The booth had environmental displays and informational handouts. Committee members also addressed questions from visitors.
The Fairfield Glade Environmental Committee has been hard at work serving the interests and needs of the community. Watch for our future articles and feel free to contact the committee if you have questions or concerns.
