KOTR honors two retiring storybook readers
By KEN STEADMAN
Kids on the Rise (KOTR) have three separate programs to assist a specific group of youngsters in the Cumberland County School System. One of these programs is called Storybook Readers where volunteers spend one hour a week reading aloud to preschool through 1st grade classrooms. This program encourages early literacy.
Two Storybook Readers, Dottie Belvo and Becky Pittman, recently retired after spending a combined total of 20 years of volunteer service with our school children. Dottie spent the past seven years and Becky the past thirteen years serving these young persons with storybook dreams and fantasies.
A retirement/recognition luncheon was planned by KOTR to honor these two ladies and their spouses. Some members of the KOTR Board attended. Cheryl Richardson from Cumberland County Schools made the presentation of two attractive framed Certificates of Appreciation with much thanks from the School System.
KOTR Executive Director Gene Skipworth expressed his thanks to the ladies for their unselfish dedication for all of these years. He commented, “The entire KOTR Program has grown greatly over the past 15 years because of volunteers like Dottie and Becky. Many young minds have been touched and lives changed in Cumberland County through the effort of our programs”.
New Storybook Readers and role model Mentors are constantly needed. Gene would be most happy to explain KOTR and detail the ways you as a volunteer could gain personal satisfaction and pride by helping. Please call him at 459-2388, cell phone 200-0329 or e-mail at [email protected].
