Ladies Club to announce scholarship winners
For The Vista
And the recipients are…
Yes, it is time! The year-long efforts by members of the Fairfield Glade Ladies Club dedicated to raising funds for Scholarships will come to fruition at the June 6 luncheon meeting to be held at the Fairfield Glade Community Center.
Scholarship Chairs, Cynthia Johnson and Barb Storer, and committee members Barbara Brust, Sara Flohr, Cora Norman, Jan O’Keefe, and Sara Tripicano spent many hours reviewing 46 applications and interviewing 22 outstanding applicants from Cumberland County.
Fourteen exemplary young people were selected. They will be present and learn at that time the amount of their scholarship. Four Tennessee Technology Center students, one Roane State applicant and 10 recent graduates from Cumberland County High School and Stone Memorial High School will receive scholarships varying from one $1,000 to $5,000.
Members of the Ladies Club worked diligently throughout the club year to raise funds and we are delighted to announce that we are making a $30,000 investment in 14 deserving Cumberland County residents.
It is always a highlight to hear their ambitions, achievements, and goals, and meet those in whom we are making a substantial financial investment. This is a community wide success story and they are grateful to the many local businesses who helped underwrite expenses to ensure the maximum amount possible would go to the students.
Whether one served as an officer, committee chair, committee member, attended a house tour or the Fashion Show, purchased something at the Marketplaces, donated baked goods or ‘white elephants’, participated in a travel opportunity, or were one of the many unsung heroines, each member can be proud of her contribution to this success story. $30,000 truly proves that many hands make light work.
Another highlight of the meeting will be the installation of officers for 2012-2014 conducted by Judie Klienfelt and Carolyn O’Neal, Co-Chairs of the Nominating Committee:
• President: Viva Bosland
• First Vice President: Sherry Botsford
• Second Vice President: Judie Kleinfelt
• Recording Secretary: Sharon Stevens
• Corresponding Secretary: Vicki Lahti
• Treasurer: Cindy Johnson
• Assistant Treasurer: Carol Pontius.
If you were on the recent trip to Louisville and Churchill Downs, you will want to visit the photo pages of the Ladies Club Website: ffgladiesclub.org. In fact, photos of all travel excursions, activities and meetings are featured. You might even want to download a brochure for a proposed trip.
The Travel Committee does not take a break for summer nor do the Committee Chairs who will be organizing lots of fun and enticing events for the 2012-2013 club year.
They are not collecting items for local charities this month. Instead they suggest you take a look in your medicine chest for outdated or no longer needed medicines. Cumberland County Law Enforcement personnel will be on hand to collect your no longer needed prescription drugs. Disposing of prescription drugs can be difficult.
The Ladies Club does not want them to get into the wrong hands nor is it safe for our environment to flush them down the commode. As a public service, the Ladies Club is welcoming representatives of the task force to be in the lobby with collection containers before the meeting.
As always, doors will open at 10 A.M. at the Conference Center so you will have ample time for a beverage and a visit with friends.
You might want to peruse the Travel Table and pick up brochures for the trips being offered. Your next step should be to pay your dues for 2012-2013 — still a bargain at $10. Be sure to double check the yearbook to ensure your information is correct.
Luncheon is served following the meeting which begins at 11:30 A.M. Chef Jerry is preparing Rotini with Chicken Strips, asparagus and snap peas, rolls, beverages and a sweet surprise ending.
Reservations will be accepted on Wednesday, May 30, between 8 and 10 A.M. The easiest way to email [email protected] or by calling 210-0067 during the same hours. Be certain to include the names of those with whom you wish to be seated.
Cancellations must be received by Friday, June 1, or you will be responsible for the cost of your meal. Those checking you in would appreciate $13 checks to speed the process. Tables seat nine — while it is fun to go with friends and neighbors, please don’t forget to introduce yourself to anyone you don’t know and include your tablemates in the conversations. If you are new and would like to be seated with other newcomers, mention at to Gin or Vicki when you make your reservation.
As always, complimentary shuttle service is provided from the site of the former recreation center both before and following the meeting. With more timeshare guests this month, parking may be at a premium at the Conference Center.
