Maybe there is a perfect job after all
My father, a long time ago when I was just a wee little guy, told me that there is no such thing as the “Perfect Job.”
Growing up, I quickly learned that to be an accurate assessment.
My first job seemed like the perfect job for about a week or so until I got my first check.
I was working at a local ice cream place —a Dairy Queen wannabe, you might say.
The slick Monty Hall-like owner offered me minimum wage (which I believe was $3 or so at that time) … OR $1 per hour and all the food I wanted to eat while on the clock.
I did what any 15-year-old growing lad would do — I took door number two … the FOOD!
I found that I quickly got sick of that food — especially since I had to make it — and that working 23 hours and getting $23 was not a frugal business decision.
Now, I am not going to bore you with all the various jobs I have worked. But I will say this:
My current gig is about as close to perfect as I could ask for.
When I left the newspaper biz in Ohio, after 25+ years (including my stints as an editor at my college newspaper and internships), I thought I would never write or edit another story or layout another section.
But the opportunity arose to take over operations of The Vista and I have not regretted it for a moment.
This job is not only what I seemingly was born to do, and, though I work pretty much every day to some degree, I do love being my own boss and the fact that my office is a mile from my house.
The folks of Fairfield Glade have been so kind in their comments about the changes I have tried to bring to The Vista. The support has been truly amazing from readers and advertisers alike as they have “liked what they have seen” so far.
Some of asked me what kind of feedback has there been. I never like to dislocate my shoulder trying to pat myself on the back — but it has been ALL positive. Seriously, not one negative comment.
Well, OK … there was the kind fella who took the time out of his busy schedule to make a Xerox copy of a story, highlight in yellow a couple mistakes, and mail it to me with the words, “Need a copy editor much?”
Ah, that was so sweet…
Fact is, you usually hear only the bad or negative in this business. So the response has been a little surprising and has bowled me over.
So I just wanted to say from my heart, “Thank you, Fairfield Glade!”
Sometimes I have to pinch myself and remind myself that, yes, I just may have found the “Perfect Job.”
