Glade group on a mission to have road designated as Scenic Parkway
Special to The Vista
A group of Fairfield Glade residents is preparing a request to designate State Route 101 (Peavine Road) as a Scenic Parkway under the Tennessee Scenic Parkway program. The request, and a supporting petition, will be submitted this spring to the Commissioner of the Tennessee Department of Transportation.
“We are excited to launch this effort,” said Cathy Tipton, leader of the Friends of Peavine, a group of citizens organized to obtain the parkway title. “Peavine Road being designated as a Parkway will be a huge plus for Cumberland County.”
According to Tipton, a Parkway designation under the Tennessee Scenic Parkway program promotes several important goals, among them protecting and preserving Tennessee’s scenic and natural qualities, and furnishing motorists a safe and relaxing route to experience the beauty of Tennessee.
The designation also places reasonable limits on outdoor advertising.
The request consists of a letter asking for the designation, along with a map and photos of the route, as well as a description of how Peavine Road would contribute to the overall Tennessee Parkway system.
“The request must include strong community support for the designation, and to do that we need help. This is where the County and local residents, particularly in Fairfield Glade, come in,” says Tipton.
Interested residents and visitors alike can sign a petition prepared by the Friends of Peavine to show support for this designation. Watch for the Friends of Peavine volunteers at the Village Green Mall common area in Fairfield Glade to sign the petition in the coming weeks.
Interested citizens may also sign the petition (on page 2A) and mail it in.
“We hope everyone in the Glade and surrounding communities will support this initiative by signing their name to the petition,” says Tipton.
Experience has shown that residents of Cumberland County place a high value on its scenic beauty. They can show their support of this project as a way to protect that beauty and preserve it for future generations.
