Byron Buell was responsible for selecting the 2013 Fairfield Glade “Lion of the Year” because he was selected for the honor in 2012.
However, Byron could not be present at the June 17th meeting when all other honors will be awarded.
So, to the surprise of Marty Smith he was called forward at the June 3rd meeting to receive his memorable plaque.
Smith has served as Glade Lions Club 1st Vice President during the 2012-2013 year. He has been a Lion member since November 2010 and has participated in nearly all club programs.
Also at the June 3rd meeting, four new members — Kenneth Cox, Lisa Copeland, Bill McCay and Cameron Sexton — were inducted at the Fairfield Glade Lions Club.
Smith highlighted the night as he was rewarded for enthusiastic spirit about Lions activities. He will become the new Lions Club President starting July 1.
Smith has actively supported the membership program including the sponsorship and mentoring of a new member. He has contributed to the Clubs orientation meeting with new suggestions for improvements. His new “fun” ideas at club meetings have been incorporated.
His contribution to the Lions Club website has helped get the job done and he even dressed up as Santa at the December meeting.
In addition, Marty is a leader at the Fairfield Glade Community Church. He served as moderator for the Men’s Fellowship where he led projects to re-stripe the parking lot, restore flagpoles, add a concrete pad for the storage shed and helped build beds for the Bread of Life shelter. He is also a sound engineer and liturgist at the church.
The 2013-2014 Lions Club year should be an interesting and eventful term with Smith as President. There will be only one dinner meeting per month starting in July. They all start at 6 P.M. on the third Monday of each month at the Druid Hills Country Club with an interesting guest speaker to help keep you informed.
New male and female members are always welcome and a special reduced membership rate is offered for husband and wife. Please call membership chairman Jerry McBride at 707-0438 for more information about how the Lions serve our community.
