Spike’s refreshing new look inviting to residents and visitors
For The Vista
Featuring Jim Arber
Peavine Rd. travelers have noticed major activity for weeks at what once was the Phil-ing Station sports bar.
If you didn’t notice maybe you should stop driving before you run into something. For over a month it was all elbows and other parts runnin’ around outside, inside, on the roof and in the parking lot.
The construction is mostly finished now and so the old Phil-ing station. Gone — it just is no more.
It has been transformed completely into a brand new sports bar called “Spikes Sports Grille”. The only thing that remains of the old haunt are the bones. Everything else has been replaced. Can’t really say refurbished or remodeled, that doesn’t get it. It’s more like the old place has been re-born.
The previous owners, Phil and Leslie Young sold the business to the proud and busy new owners Phil and Carla Ehrsam.
Phil and Leslie are now enjoying a well-deserved retirement at last. Golf, golf, golf and maybe some fishing. Recently ran into Phil and Leslie and they look at least 10 years younger and seem happy as clams.
But back to the project. The exterior is now finished. The Parking lot has been graded and expanded, the exterior walls have new siding, new roof and an entirely new exterior personality achieved.
Plans are in place to expand the rear parking lot to create a convenient driveway at some point to Fairview Dr. behind the new Spikes.
That exterior motif that is so visible from Peavine has been carried into the entirely new and exciting interior. Reminds us of a bar/restaurant you might see in that old movie, The Sting, set during prohibition. Or, as my wife said, like an establishment you might find in the rural midwest in Big Ten country. Whatever, new life has been breathed into the old place. It needed it.
It is now inviting, comfortable and informal. Could be a family atmosphere if we had some kiddoes. Everything is new from floor to ceiling and beyond. New furniture, HVAC, 12 state of the art flat screen TVs, new coolers behind and underneath the new bar, high top tables to facilitate sports viewing and new ceiling lights that give the interior a cheerful brightness without the glare.
There are many more improvements just too numerous to list. It should be noted that new owner Phil “Hawkeye” Ehrsam did the design work. It is both interesting and original.
Yes, this is a real sports bar. To prove it they will offer: NFL Sunday Football package which means that every NFL Sunday game will be available. You Packer fans can relax. They have you covered. The Big Ten network and SEC network will also be available. Pay per view events will, of course, not be included unless there is a huge demand for something specific.
The patio is currently under construction and will be open on June 1 if everything goes as scheduled. The Patio square footage is over 1000 sq ft and much is planned for the new space. The bar will be replaced, new furniture purchased, outdoor lavatories and maybe even some landscaping is in the works. On weekends they plan to offer guitar/vocal type entertainment in the early evening.
There are two dates worth remembering. June 1 is the patio opening and will feature live music from Nashville. Unfortunately you can’t remember the other date because it is not firm yet. For sure, it will be near mid June . It is planned to be a memorable Grand Opening and not to be missed. The current menu will also be revised at this time to include those items that are most popular and some exciting new offerings.
From every indication, Spikes will be a most welcome addition to the Crossville and Fairfield Glade communities. Singularly welcome in Fairfield Glade because it gives residents another clean, wholesome choice to gather, enjoy sports and good food. The new owners: Phil and Carla Ehrsam, are totally committed to make a success here by offering a quality experience at a fair price. They place a great deal of importance on integrity and fair dealing. We wish them well.
If all this sounds good to you try Spikes Sports Grille, we think you’ll like it.
