For The Vista
Mary and Bruce Bates are not the only married couple who are members of the Cumberland Medical Center Wellness Complex at Fairfield Glade, but they are the only 90-year-old couple.
As a result, they qualify for free membership because they have been Complex members for at least a year before their 90th birthday.
Mary turned 90 last month. Bruce turned 90 in February of 2012. They have been married 65 years.
And they plan to continue to use their memberships to exercise regularly on the walking track and weight machines, but first they must finish their move from their home to the Good Samaritans Senior Living facility in Fairfield Glade.
“As soon as we finish the move, we’ll be back exercising,” Mrs. Bates said recently at a party for all of the 90-Plus Club members at the Fairfield Glade facility.
The party was held as part of the facility’s 10th anniversary observance.
There are 22 current members of the Complex who are 90 or over and qualify for the free membership. Twelve of the members attended the party and work out regularly when they aren’t doing something else.
One for example, June Frazier, age 92, was late for the party because she was playing a regular round of golf.
They all have interesting stories to tell.
Mrs. Bates grew up on an Illinois farm during The Great Depression.
“We were pretty self-sufficient, providing most of our own food except for staples like coffee, flour and sugar,” she said.
“I went to a one-room school for eight years, before graduating from a high school of 1,900 students. There were 300 in my graduating class, she said.
Mrs. Bates spent two years at Eureka College in Illinois, where she met Bruce, then moved to the University of Iowa in Iowa City, Iowa.
Mr. Bates received naval pre-flight training at the same time at the University of Iowa.
After graduation, Mrs. Bates taught high school for a year, and then moved to New York City, New York, where she took voice training. There she met tenor Mario Lanza shortly before his Hollywood movie career took off.
“He mentored me while I was in New York and arranged for my vocal coach,” she said. After a year in New York, she returned to Illinois. The Bates were married in 1947, and began raising a family in the Chicago area.
Through the years, Mrs. Bates continued to use her singing ability in church choirs.
The Bates resided in Naperville, Illinois for nearly 20 years before moving to Fairfield Glade in 1998.
